Hi,
I can see two things that could lead to this problem. One is that the NAS does not have a guess/anonymous access to list shared devices and/or you have to already be logged as "admin" or similar to do this. Also, sometimes using the name of the device instead of the IP and vice versa can give different result.i.e. Using smb://nameofnas instead of smb://192.168.x.x
Oh, and third, also try to "browse" the Network shortcut from the file manager, sometimes the username/password popup is more accessible this way... for me and a QNAP anyways. ;)
Good luck!

I still can't see a list of shares though when I just type in that ip address.

You won't. In some NAS devices, the share access starts at the root name.

That worked.  After I put the share name I can access that share.  I still can't see a list of shares though when I just type in that ip address.

Try - smb://192.168.1.xx/rootofnas/ where rootofnas is the root directory of the device. Have you had trouble with this before?

If the IP address for the NAS is correct, I can't see a problem. Can you ping the NAS from LL?

I have a fresh install of LL4.8 with all updates and am trying to access my samba shares on my asustor NAS.

When I type in smb://192.168.1.xx for the samba share in thunar I get the message "Failed to Open File System"
