Title: No network after installing kernel
Post by: CSNLinux on February 20, 2018, 04:09:16 PM
Well,

I bit off more than I could chew on. But that's quite normal for one who want's to go to fast when he just learned how to walk.

Okay, what's the problem...

Like my older posts, I'm still triyng to figure out how to get my wifi up and running on my laptop on LL3.8

I did some searching here and there. Tried some possible solutions untill yesterday when I stumbled upon one that told me about Kernel 4.12.
So, as noob as I am. downloaded and installed it. restarted my laptop and BAM!
No connection or what so ever.

So, now I'm on my Windows desktop writing this post. This one is next to go cold-turkey and meet LL. But first solve some problems.

If there's anyone amongst you who would/can make some time to give me a step-by-step instruction for this matter, he/she would make me a very happy man.

Hello CSNLinux,

"no connection or what so ever" - You have no ethernet connection also ?

Which is the wireless info for the computer ?

Start of with the basics. What is the output of each of these commands:

Code: [Select]
inxi -n
Code: [Select]
sudo lshw -C network
Code: [Select]
rfkill list

It's a bit more work now, making screenshot, put on usb, stick usb into desktop, upload the images, linking image to post.

Well, it's for the good and keeps me working

Can't help with the problem I'm afraid but this is happening to other distros based on Ubuntu too. There is a thread about it on the Bodhi Linux forum, wouldn't surprise me if there was on other forums too.
As well as help from the good folk here take a look on the Ubuntu and Bodhi forums to see if anyone has come up with a solution. It's all relevant as they all use the same kernel as Linux Lite.

Had a quick look around and on the Bodhi forum the guy still had Ethernet but no wireless so got around it by installing the older kernel again.
I also found this on a Google search: https://www.digitalocean.com/community/questions/problem-with-updating-kernel-eth0-now-missing (https://www.digitalocean.com/community/questions/problem-with-updating-kernel-eth0-now-missing)
Going by that, it seems it's not just an Ubuntu problem but something new in the latest kernels that is naming things wrong in some config files. May be worth your time to have a read and see if you are in a similar situation.

I read it and tried some options, but most of them resulted in nothing or a failure message. The article also tells something about
Code: [Select]
'dmesg'This gave me a text result as large as the Holy Book itself and tells me, i guess, something about the hardware installed and the used drivers etc. for those. But, surprisingly, I couldn't find me ethernet and wifi card here.
But when I travel to System>System Information> PCI Devices both my Ethernet and Network controller are shown.

I'm really trying to get my head around all of this, but I need some help

Thanx for the help but this didn't work for me after the restart request I got
Code: [Select]
Job for NetworkManager.service failed because the control process exited with error code.
See "systemctl status NetworkManager.service" and "journalctl -xe" for details.
To be honest, I don't even know how to see these or even what to do with them if I could.

You could try what the guy on the Bodhi forum did, he downloaded the original kernel and headers version as a .deb file then installed it that way. I don't know what else to suggest, maybe Jerry or someone with more knowledge on it will come up with something.

Thanx anyway :D

Well apparently you have a hardware switch for WIFI. Look in the BIOS for the enable keys. Probably fn/+something else.

*Also why in the world you would pick kernel 4.12 instead of 4.13 I can't imagine. 4.13 is the current hwe kernel for Ubuntu LTS.

The BIOS on my laptop gives me very little possibilities to use or alter

You have a hardware switch. It's there somewhere. Probably in the PCI page of the BIOS. You may have to tab down to it not arrow. Just for now, until you find it, after the lap boots to LL try fn+F2  and see if WIFI starts.

My laptop uses PhoenixBIOS Setup Utility this gives me 6 tabs (Info./Main/Advanced/Security/Boot/Exit) So you would expect this one to be in 'Advanced"  but this gives me only 4 options and to de- or enabled them

This laptop (Easynote) has a wifi-indicator above the keyboard. on or off doesn't make any difference

Apparently it's not mapped correctly to the OS then. The key you are speaking of is a gadget/macro type key which means it's not a real key just a command like fn+F2. Did you try fn+F2? You can try setting your LL system to autologin first, and then disabling or enabling numbers lock in the BIOS. (one way or the other eliminates the need for fn in a gadget key) Otherwise you could look for a Linux keyboard map for your device. You can kill the key control from root in safe mode and enable WIFI always since the drivers are there, but I'd have to go look up the way to do that in Ubuntu myself.

My god! What are you on the internet with now? You download the .deb using whatever computer you have working, you put it on a USB stick or external drive and transfer it to the dead machine, once it's on there double click it and install it just like you would on Windows.
You don't need a network connection to do that, that's why I suggested it!

'My god' and such responses are not helpful and don't instill confidence in people.

@CSNLinux try the following:

Code: [Select]
sudo rfkill unblock all
You are hardware blocked, so it's either BIOS or a key combo as others have stated. You can also try resetting your BIOS to defaults. There is no need for the 4.12 kernel either, so remove that before you do anything else first via Lite Tweaks. You need to press Shift key when you boot up to get the Grub menu, select Advanced options and choose an earlier kernel. Then you can remove 4.12

You can also try:

Code: [Select]
sudo sed -i 's/wifi.powersave = 3/wifi.powersave = 2/g' /etc/NetworkManager/conf.d/default-wifi-powersave-on.conf
after my previous post.

For some funny unknown reason Kernel 4.12 is not displayed here

Or is it here, but not named the same way?

You're probably running on it. What does uname -srv show?

So yes you're booted to 4.12, reboot choosing advanced options selecting an earlier kernel (Choose 4.4.0-112)
Once booted to 4.4.0-112 will be removable in Lite Tweaks.. 4.12 isn't showing in tweaks now cause your in it :)

Once 4.12 is removed you can reboot and typical LL option will boot back to 4.4.0-112

Now you should be back - but wanted to get you past your last post - Not to step on TC or others toes, maybe I saved them from typing the same ;)

The newer kernel may not work with your hardware as you're seeing, some of my older stuff gets flaky if I try higher than 4.4..

If still in 4.12
But the hard block as mentioned could be a keystroke (mine is fn+F2) look for the tower with waves.. Or post your laptop model and we can confirm..
May want to check NICs are not disabled in Network Manager
Clicking the wireless/network icon ensuring checks by Enable Wi-Fi and Enable Networking

Yep. You have to select the next oldest kernel from Advanced Options in the grub menu and boot that one first like Jerry said. Once you're on that 4.4.x-x you can delete 4.12 from Lite Tweaks. Hold down the shift key when you turn on the computer and you should get the grub menu where the Advanced Options are. Arrow key to scroll down to it. Enter to open it. Enter to boot the selected kernel. Most of this is in help manual.

Are we all stuck on the same page here?
Can imagine!
I thought about a clean install of LL on my laptop but I remembered that I had WIFI issues from day one.

Hmmm...what to do!?

Now that you're on the 4.4.x-x kernel series run the commands Jerry suggested.

1) sudo rfkill unblock all

2) sudo sed -i 's/wifi.powersave = 3/wifi.powersave = 2/g' /etc/NetworkManager/conf.d/default-wifi-powersave-on.conf

Oké that was a lot of typing.
Result
Code: [Select]
sed: can't read /etc/NetworkManager/conf.d/default-wifi-powersafe-on.conf:
No such file or directory

Should be powersave not powersafe.  Maybe you could copy commands to a USB stick with notepad (save as a text file) then copy and paste from the USB text file to the LL terminal.

Okay, So when I start LL in repair mode / save mode (what's it called)
I suddenly have a working network connection. When rebooting and start in normal mode....gone!!!

Is this to be solved or better start all over from scratch?
