N4RPS:
Hello!

From what you have posted, it looks like you're going directly out to the Internet through a DSL modem without a router in between your PC and the DSL modem. As for myself, I have always used a router (ISP-provided or otherwise) between my broadband modems and my PCs. Doing so has proven to greatly simplify everything, so all this is new territory for me, also.

With direct DSL modem connections, some configuration is required. You may need to look at your XP DSL connection settings in more detail to try and figure out how everything should be set up.

In Windows, DSL providers usually provide a CD that sets everything up automatically for you, so you may have no clue about how to do any of this. Consequently. if what I am about to tell you doesn't work, or if you've tried all this already without success, then you will probably have to contact your ISP, and hope they have someone there who knows something about how to set up a DSL connection for Ubuntu Linux. With all that said, here goes:

On the bottom panel, click on the network icon and select 'Edit', then click 'Add'. A new box will appear, saying 'Choose a connection type'. Click on the drop box and select 'DSL', then click on the 'Create' button.

Go through all the tabs. 'Hovering' over some of the entries will pop up helpful snippets. Additionally, the files you posted here should give you some kind of idea about how to set up some of the required settings.

Unless/until someone more qualified with resolving this issue steps up, right now, this is the best I can do for you. Once you get this working, I hope you'll come back and share the details with us, so that someone can add the procedure to the help manual...
