I have discovered what this problem was due to. I had previously installed this option in the main menu myself, when attempting to install Windows wireless drivers (and forgotten that I had done this). How to install this is described on the Ubuntu forums and when you install this utility via the Terminal the option appears on the main menu. It really is an excellent option to have on the menu for older hardware.
Since Linux lite seems to aim to be supporting older hardware, I would suggest that this should be added to the Linux lite main menu; it really does make it so easy to install the required drivers. OS MX-17 for example has it as permanent option on their main menu.
