I'm using LL 2.8. Could someone tell me what goes where in the network settings for this CloudFlare service. The linux instructions below are for Ubuntu and LL doesn't have an "off" button. I can't attach jpegs of the network windows which would help.

"Setup on Linux

Setting up 1.1.1.1 takes two minutes and requires no technical skill or special software. Even if you’re a computer novice, pick your device below for an easy-to-follow setup guide.

While these steps are for Ubuntu, most Linux distributions configure DNS settings through the Network Manager. Alternatively, your DNS settings can be specified in /etc/resolv.conf

Click the Applications icon on the left menu bar.
    Click Settings, then Network.
Find your internet connection on the right pane, then click the gear icon.
Click the IPv4 or IPv6 tab to view your DNS settings.
Set the “Automatic” toggle on the DNS entry to Off.
Provide the 1.1.1.1 DNS addresses in the DNS entries field:
        1.0.0.1
        For IPv6: 2606:4700:4700::1111,2606:4700:4700::1001
Click Apply, then restart your browser.
You’re all set! Your device now has faster, more private DNS servers"

1.1.1.1 is definitely fast. I couldn't notice the difference at first (there is already a DNS forwarder sitting in my network (cache kicks in and there is no way the remote server can be as fast as local ones) but every single query I threw at 1.1.1.1 was answered faster than Quad9, Google DNS, Norton DNS and OpenDNS (which is unfair because OpenDNS does not do DNSSEC validation).

Sorry for seeming stupid and preferring Linux - I just don't know any better.

I use the google DNS 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4, but recently if cloudflare launched a new DNS server, it seems (or they said) is more faster an secure 1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1
i believed i'ts was a prank because the april's fools day, but no,seems legit.

That's quite interesting. The list of DNS providers is getting longer and more competitive. As for reliability or speed I can't really say at this point (haven't tested it yet but I will certainly give it a try at some point). It doesn't hurt to have another option under the sleeve.

My preferred forwarder is Quad9 (9.9.9.9) which is the fastest in my location also (11-21ms on first queries). It sits behind IBM X-Force threat intelligence, offers DNSSC, no tracking, no personally-identifiable information is collected by their system. IP addresses of end users are not stored to disk or distributed outside of the equipment answering the queries in the local data center. Quad9 is a not-for-profit organization. When a malicious site is blocked they simply return a NXDOMAIN (No existent domain); no redirection, no ads, zip, zero.

Like @firenice03 I've also used OpenDNS but the lack of DNSSEC pushed me away.  Speed is nice but speed, DNSSEC support and privacy is nicer :)

With all and all you won't be surprised if I tell you that the fastest forwarder for you is your Linux Lite box. You can setup dnsmasq in your box and use it as your DNS/DHCP for your LAN (as long as you are willing to keep it on) and then you'll certainly enjoy from an extra boost in speed in terms of browsing/DNS resolution.

I use OpenDNS - don't know if much faster than my default DNS from my ISP..
I use the family shield IP's to block known "No No" pages ;)

Mine are set to the router.. for all devices..

Google has a set as well may have used on individual PC's a while back (8.8.8.8 )

has anyone heard about changing the DNS settings to get a bit more speed and security. Cloudflare says that changing the DNS to 1.1.1.1 will acheive this. any thoughts or has anyone done this? supposedly you can do this to the router and computter.

link to their site......  https://1.1.1.1/
