Most Linux Lite forum regulars here have probably figured out by now that my interest is in finding simple GUI clicker friendly ways to enable power local area networking for home users and small business users, in Linux Lite ways, in Windows ways, and in cross platform ways.
I have managed to hack together a minimally featured working 64 bit Linux Lite desktop for bash in Windows 10, though admittedly severely hacked, it performs well on an adequate, but somewhat under powered dated Dell computer (2.33g CPU, 4gig RAM, 500gig SSD) using an Xming external X server running in Windows 10. This was not particularly difficult to do. The performance is adequate, everything works and plays together okay, but somewhat sluggishly. I can run G-Vim and Leafpad, a Links2 web browser in graphics mode, and Double Commander reasonably effectively on my hacked together Linux Lite desktop. Getting that far required a bit of effort, but the reward of making the GUI function doesn’t reach the big payoff until you connect the Windows 10 computer via Remmina and Windows RDP to a Linux Lite computer.
Starting bash, and using WSL, via Remmina and Windows RDP from your Linux computer, noticeably increases the speed of any graphical applications running in WSL. Windows sorts and backgrounds many Windows processes when connected this way (previous tutorials) and some Linux applications simply default to X on your Linux computer during the session, though the desktop and its menus running in bash still use the external Xming server during the session, but even this is faster via RDP because of Windows’ channeling priorities. It works very well, and the Links2 web browser can connect to the Internet during the session in graphics mode, and is very fast performing with manually entered URLs.
I have a series of seven screen shots with descriptions I like to post, but I am a bit uncertain about how to do that sensibly on this forum, or if that many images are acceptable here. I could use a few pointers on posting these, if there is any interest. I have also prepared a document containing all the past tutorials I have posted here with corrections, and additions, and organized with a TOC. Would like to post that too as maybe a sticky in the Network section of the forum. Could use some guidance on these forum posting issues. Feel free to use my email for communications.

Yes I have managed to hack a nice one together. Have to clean up the unused code. I can't work on it anymore today, but I have gotten all to play well together so far. Has g-Vim, Double Commander, Leafpad, and Links2, all fully graphical, and all is well and branded LL on the menu icons and desktop wallpaper. Looks just like LL 3.0. Links2 and Double Commander work excellently in the WSL bash shell once configured, and I can't wait to play with g-Vim. I do have to quit for today. Friday night here, and the little woman is demanding for her one night out a week. I will get screen shots up over the weekend. I want to install the humanity icon set, and a couple terminal additions, and a darker theme. Already makes me smile every time I look at it though.

A lot of Linux system calls and symlinks have no translation as yet in WSL, and can't be modified without MS developer keys, so there's not much I can do about that (I could, but I don't have a spare Windows 10 box, really don't want another one) I'd guess it's easier to eliminate what won't work from the desktop on the Linux end. I'll get back to you on this, because it appears to me this afternoon that a simple GUI running openbox windows manager may be the easiest solution. This may be a fairly simple thing to do. Don't need desktop user choices, locales, just about everything that has to do with that, maybe just a GUI panel with a nice feather on it. I'll put something simple together. Right now gvim and leafpad work well from the lxde desktop, but the file manager is too simple, and I need to find a simpler web browser build. I want FORG to run too, so I'll mess with that a bit. Maybe tomorrow sometime I'll have something to look at. Thanks.

Can you please elaborate on 'isolate the system calls in LL enough to get this done.'

Jerry, and all,
Tried XFCE4 and Unity in bash with Xming external Xserver with unsatisfactory success. LXDE however runs decently. Bash is based on trusty, so what I would really like to do is produce a slimmed down LL branded desktop, I guess LL2.6, but with no network manager, no Libreoffice, no sound utilities, simple web browser not firefox, but not lynx either, etc. no mail client, but with a few familiar needed applications like leafpad or gedit, cherry tree, g-vim, synaptic, and Thunar or Double Commander, SSH and SSL can be handled seperately from the shell. As I said LXDE runs decently even with all the unneeded applications. Would love to see a lean mean LL desktop spin up in that bash shell on windows 10. Can I isolate the system calls in LL enough to get this done? Suggestions?
