Title: Lite Welcome - Suggestions welcomed
Post by: Jerry on July 29, 2014, 01:10:13 AM
I'm currently developing a Welcome Screen for the next version of Linux Lite. It is a fork of the Manjaro welcome screen, customized for Linux Lite. Here is a teaser of the work so far...

As more is added and as the distro is at 700M, is there a likely hood of releasing an iso with more that can be installed from a DVD?

Not likely Dookus, in order to ensure that Linux Lite is available to as many people as possible, those with older systems that only have a cd drive and cannot boot from usb must have the cd option available to them to so they don't miss out on the experience of linux. This of course has the flow on effect of ensuring more computers don't end up at the dump, things like that. Cheers.

I like that welcome screen. Good job Valtam. :)
Those old systems can give you a headache. It's a bit tricky to install it on system that has a CD-ROM not working any more. Ploop boot helps but you have to find an old usb flash drive that can boot that old motherboard. If you can start MS-DOS to flash bios with that usb drive, you can boot ploop as well. I've installed linux mint on one old pc for my friend some time ago. I had one old PQI 128 MB flash :) ,  that helped. I've managed to boot up mint from the other flash drive, but I had to force ploop to use usb 1.1 mode. It was so slow, but I've installed it. :D

That welcome screen will be useful. Is the "Install Updates - Do this first" an update notifier?

No, it's information. You click on it and it tells you what to do.

For those wanting to test this, I have an early build available. To test this, do the following:

Open a terminal and do:

Code: [Select]
leafpad ~/.config/autostart/lite_welcome.desktop
paste the following into the file and then save and close it.

Code: [Select]
[Desktop Entry]
Encoding=UTF-8
Type=Application
Name=Linux Lite Welcome
Comment=Linux Lite Welcome Screen
Exec=lite-welcome
Categories=X-XFCE;GTK;Settings;HardwareSettings
OnlyShowIn=XFCE;
StartupNotify=false
Terminal=false
Hidden=false
Icon=menu-icon

Then do:

Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install lite-welcome
Now log out and login in again, you should see the Welcome Screen. In a future Linux Lite build of LL, this will only show after a fresh install.

Look forward to your feedback :)

Just followed your instructions, Valtam, and it works. Very nice. I'd much prefer a Welcome Screen similar to (or forked from) the Linux Mint welcome screen, but this is great nonetheless.

On a side-note, I saved the code you posted as lite_welcome.desktop. Obviously, I didn't have any negative effect the first time the Welcome Screen ran, but will this have any negative side-effects later on?

Thanks for testing so soon. I can't see this having any negative side-effects. Cheers.

It's going preety well, hopefully it will be finished soon.
Some changes to the frontend to look better and backend so we could launch stuff right from the welcome screen with buttons. Also new code will be python 3 compatible.
Like a small control center.  ;D
On the left side is the newer code.

Under the "Install Updates - Do this First section," there's a typo in the first sentence.  The word "your" should be "you."  Currently, it reads:

Once you have installed Linux Lite and before you can begin using it, your first need to run Menu, Favorites, Install Updates. If you are running the Live version of Linux Lite, there is no need to do this.

Thanks torreydale, have fixed typo. Development branch here - https://github.com/linuxlite/litewelcome

I just checked, and mine is showing this:

So it's still showing "...your first need to run Menu, Favorites, Install Updates."

The link I provided was the development page. Actual commit: https://github.com/linuxlite/litewelcome/commit/4867f63d16cc113849908b007846112b5023c766 (https://github.com/linuxlite/litewelcome/commit/4867f63d16cc113849908b007846112b5023c766)

This has not been pushed as a package. It will be there in 2.6

Title: Re: Lite Welcome - a thought on the progress bar
Post by: Stan_the_Man on October 25, 2015, 03:06:08 PM
In his review of December 5, 2014*, Gayan said “Below is the boot-logo and it includes a progress-bar, accuracy of which, is questionable.
                     Boot logo of Linux Lite 2.2
As an example, usually when the progress-bar reaches the half limit, the logo disappears and the system executes the login screen and starts to load the desktop. Perhaps the progress-bar then represented the whole boot process (from ‘init’ till the desktop got fully loaded), but I think it should have displayed the progress from ‘init’ to login-screen only, otherwise it can be a bit confusing.
The Desktop…
Linux Lite pops-up a welcome screen when you first login to the desktop. Through there you can install updates (if available), read the online documentation, release notes… though it is not terrible useful, it is nice.
                  Linux Lite 2.2 'Welcome Screen”  *

I (Stan_the_Man) would like to suggest that the LL team make a quick and cosmetic change to the Welcome Screen and simply insert the image of a progress bar at 100% This would reassure newcomers that “No”, the progress bar leaping from the Boot logo of Linux Lite to Linux Lite Welcome Screen is just as cosmetic as the complaint that progress bar is a little “understated”.
I would post the a graphic of the "Proposed Linux Lite  'Welcome Screen'” but I am only allowed to post text attachments.

Excuse the lack of graphics but I hope you get the idea. The concept is to insert the image of a progress bar at 100%  at the bottom of the Linux Lite Welcome Screen
By the time our new linux user shuts off the welcome screen, he or she has been so delighted by it’s great performance, ease of use and completeness that the they find themselves delighted that the “progress bar reaches the half limit, the logo disappears and the system executes the login screen and starts to load the desktop.
Thank you for your consideration and the wonderful LL distro.

Nice indeed :)   I like its in Lite Welcome, one of the 1st things to set at install :)
Will it be referenced in Tweaks or other Lite Tool as well? Thinking of where globally - after say they check don't show Lite Welcome where to find..  FWIW I still see Lite Welcome after boots/log outs.. LOL

If they don't know where to find, you still have to provide an answer :) Lite Welcome only. K.I.S.

What about an option to install software?  When users click on it Lite Software is launched, so they can install additional apps/tools.

Just thinking... How about after install the "install" button become the "Lite Toolbox" button... Which could open the "Control Panel" where MANY if not all Lite XXXX  tools live.

I know the CP resides on the desktop and within the Menu and I dont think its name should be changed - I like Control Panel.
Maybe a play on words... Lite Toolbox (Control Panel)...

BUT then again I dont want to see Lite Welcome become too cluttered as well...
hhhmmmmm

What I do know...

Control Panel is a good suggestion, but then we'd have a lop-sided interface. If someone can think of another absolutely essential link to balance things out, I'll certainly consider it. You have to put yourself in the shoes of a very first time user. What do they need access to straight away?
