@ralphy have noticed a strange anomaly. If the file /usr/local/sbin/.updnotify exists, Lite Updates Notify will not show the desktop notification. If the /usr/local/sbin/.updnotify file does not exist, the notification works fine:

That is intentional behavior; that's what we agreed upon. To show "Up to date" just once and not to nag the user until there is new updates available:

Thanks for the reminder.

The update notifier is not working for me either. I have set it a couple of times for once day but it never gives me notifications. I continue to check daily manually by Install Updates which finds updates but I do not get notifications from the new app. No big deal. I wait for an update to fix it.
-
I've seen it a couple times.. Its tricky as the message is brief. It's a popup (upper right corner for me) lasts only a couple of seconds then goes away. Having been up at midnight past couple nights I have seen it :)
Perhaps setting to the "hourly" mark you may catch it :)
Not sure if this would work, don't see why not - set hourly then manually change clock to a couple minutes before the next hour and wait... 8) 8)
It's brief - As when you boot a laptop and it connects to WiFi the popup only last for a few, same way...
Perhaps having the message appear and stay until clicked on to hide??

Ok guys, let's help each other here to figure it out. First, let's be clear about how Lite Updates Notify works:
https://www.linuxliteos.com/manual/software.html#updatesnotify
Lite Updates Notify will check for new updates on shcedule as defined by the user. If no new updates are available since the last time updates were installed in the system, Lite Updates Notify will notify that the system is up to date, once. No further notifications are displayed up until new updates become available once again.
To customize how notifications appear on your screen, see Menu, All Settings, Notifications to define notifications theme, timeout, position on the screen and opacity. You must restart the session (logout and login) for notifications settings to take effect.
A quick way to check whether Lite updates notify is working in your system as it should:
Terminal:
sudo rm /usr/local/sbin/.updnotify
bash /usr/local/sbin/updatesnotify-launcher (Notification, your system is up to date should pop up ONCE)
bash /usr/local/sbin/updatesnotify-launcher (No notification should pop-up the second time)
Repeat all 3 commands to test over again.

OK. I tried the commands and the notifications showed up. I reset notifications from 5 to 10 seconds so I will see if it will do it own its on tomorrow. Deja Dup back up is set to daily and I always see the notifications. Can Notify be set in autostart to show if LL is up to date at start up?
-
I had it set at daily at 7pm, but problem is that i am almost never at the laptop at that time and i never saw the notification later in the evening when i was at laptop. So i now disabled it.
Is it maybe possible that the user can set another time then the times that are given?
-
TMG1961 (https://www.linuxliteos.com/forums/profile/?u=3473), that the same setting I have. Maybe it could just be checked at startup like I do manually?

I now do it as i did on 3.2, i check for updates just before i shut down laptop when going to bed.

I wish it behaved more like Linux Mint did it. :)
It placed an icon in the desktop bar at the bottom of the screen. if there were no updates, it would display an icon with a check mark in it. If there were updates, the icon had an exclamation point in it. And it should remain sticky and always viewable.
-
Old sayings that great minds run in same channels, TMG1961 (https://www.linuxliteos.com/forums/profile/?u=3473). ;) I'll just keep doing that too until or if it gets fixed. I have gotten so use to doing it manually, I probably will keep doing it even if notify is fixed to be sure it is working. ;D It will be useful for newbies.
-
Lite Updates Notify is still not working even after last update show it was updated? Checked Application Autostart and it is not there. Should it be there? :-\ If it is, what is the command?
-
I was on the computer last night at 7 PM and the notification update did appeared to report updates were available. Could it be made to check at daily startup like Deja Dup and the Linux Lite widget which start daily at startup? :-\
-
@Coastie that's not something we're looking at. The application is designed and functions along certain lines. There are enough options there to suit all situations. Setting checks to hourly ensures you would nearly never miss a notification. Remember, if there are no updates, you will only get one notification to tell you so, then there will be no more notifications until there are some updates available. There is no autostart option for the reasons given above.

I don't know how often Mint checks for updates, you would have to inspect the code, it may even be more than every hour, like every 2 or 3 hours. Having a constantly viewable icon is purely psychological in that it reassures people that an application is there and 'doing things'. Our application still does things, the main difference is that it doesn't show until it needs to, ensuring you are not distracted unless it is absolutely necessary. Simple, fast and free ;) (with minimal distraction)
-
@Jerry, either way this is not a problem for me. I have gotten accustom to checking daily for updates on my own and don't need it. I am just thinking about this because Lite Updates Notify will be helpful to newbies to Linux and will not be a benefit that other distros have to tempt newbies from using Linux Lite.
The hourly option like you say is probably the best and maybe the default option if does cause a problem for computers with only a small amount of RAM. Hourly may have been the default option but I don't remember now.

I'm gonna finish it up n my spare time and then I'll share it in my blog so that those interested in having an Update Manager Center can get it.

I have some mixed emotions about this. When I was newer to Linux, Mint confused me on the updates issue. I had no idea what I should select or not select to update. The numbering system was offputting, etc. Coming from Windows, I was just used to updating everything. To know what library (or in the case of Windows, what DLL) to update or ignore was too much for me. I wouldn't expect non-techie friends or family to know either. It's always been easier to just tell them to be consistent with running the Install Updates utility. And now that the 3.x series installs security updates to the kernel, I only have to add that they remove the old kernels every month or so using Lite Tweaks. Training them on update levels 1-5 is going to be a turnoff for them and me. If we go this route to appease those already familiar with Linux Mint, I say it should remain the advanced option, and the default option remain what we have now.
-
We're not porting Mint Updates, period. This is something Ralphy chooses to do in his spare time, on his own website.
We have a point and click option that works, and is easy to use without any user interaction that could end up in bad decisions being made.

@torreydale, what @Jerry said :D
Linux Lite has a simple point and click option that works. That's what goes in our distro and that's what our guidelines requires. I'm doing this on my spare time as a hobby and not because we expect to replace our own solution. Nothing to worry about :)

Thanks, @Jerry , for keeping it simple! The mint update system is confusing to me. I rather trust you and whoever else decides what update are needed. I don't even want to mess with kernel updates until they come with the regular updates.
-
@Coastie,
For the record, kernel security updates do come with the regular updates in the 3.x series.
-
Thanks Jerry and Ralphy for keeping the update system as it is.
-
@everyone you're welcome :)

Never mind. I keep getting this message:
Forbidden You don't have permission to access /forums/linux-lite-software-development/ on this server.
Additionally, a 403 Forbidden error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.
-
I'd like to see what you had in reply #17 above. But I'm not going to insist on it.
-
Nothing important. I was just agreeing with torredale about the kernel updating was what I posted before. The forum was not cooperating :(
If I put type the at symbol, I get the error message.

@humdinger70 I've pushed mintupdate-lite to my server. (https://unlockforus.com/update-manager-linux-lite-3-x-series/)

That is a great idea. One less thing to manually explain.

Update now available.
In another application update, Install Updates will fix the boot splash automatically if the any Ubuntu packages try to mess with us :)
-
The count I get on this is off. It said I had double digit kernels installed. I had one version (granted with 4 entries to be removed). I removed that version. Lite Updates Notify still told me there were several installed and suggested I use Lite Tweaks to remove them.

Probably needs to be tied to update-initramfs.

@torreydale can you please screenshot your /lib/modules folder.
Also please screenshot your /boot folder.
Can you please also provide the output of:
ls /boot/ | grep vmlinuz | wc -l
Thank you.

Thanks torreydale. I've uploaded an updated package. Please run Install Updates to get it. If on the next update notification you get no reports of Kernels to remove, we can call this fixed :)
When a kernel is removed, you should have no left over folders in /lib/modules. That's a little strange that you have all those left over folders.
-
torreydale,
Do you have, or have you had multiple (sudo) users on this partiicular OS? Have you backed up multiple times? Sorry to interrupt but something has cuased the kernel folders to remain rather than purge. Perhaps saved sessions? Active journaling logs?

Your input is always welcome.

@Jerry ,
I installed the latest updates. The /lib/modules folders remain.
@trinidad ,
I don't have any other sudo users on the computer. I only backup grsync, and I make restore points via Systemback.

@torreydale
Is this current system using nvidia card? It may be that that oldest kernel 3.13 will not purge completely without removing nvidia along with it. The newest kernel will override that of course and prevent nvidia from beng purged. The old mod folders may all be there because of that. You may need some kind of conditional command to solve this. See this old link below. Just a thought. I have had problems with nvidia purging on a few machines.

@trinidad ,
The current system is not using an nvidia card. It has an Intel integrated graphics card.
