A few weeks ago, I made an announcement on our social media pages that we were working on a new innovation.
Well I'm really excited to announce the first 'beta' version of our newest addition to our software.
Introducing Lite Info.
The purpose of the Linux Info, is to give people an idea of different computer configurations from within a Linux Lite Series. The Linux Lite Hardware Database displays Make and Model, CPU, Graphics, Audio, Network and Storage technical specifications. This provides a snapshot of the kind of computers people are able to use with Linux Lite.
This replaces the existing Hardware Database webpage.
New page: https://www.linuxliteos.com/hardware.php (https://www.linuxliteos.com/hardware.php)
Our software uses inxi to collect hardware information, which is then uploaded to the Linux Lite Hardware Database.
We hired a developer thanks to your ongoing contributions to handle all the web programming side of things. We're at the stage we're we'd like to release this for public testing.
Here's the process:
1. Run the tool via, Menu, System, Share Hardware Configuration.
2. Follow the prompts, takes about 20 seconds or less.
3. At the end of the prompts, you'll be offered to load the Hardware web page. Your submission will take between 15 - 60 mins to appear on the page, (depending on the number of submissions in the upload queue).
This provides much more accurate information and completely automates the entire process from beginning to end.
For this to be a success before going public with the final, we need testers. If we can get the kind of participation in this test that we did in the UEFI test, this would help to ensure the success of this application.

Hi Jerry,
1. I can't see RAM information. Isn't "memory" on the intro page of the software tool referring to that? I consider it a lot more helpful than hard drive size.
2. The usage of the hard drive(s) shouldn't be collected and published. Doesn't feel right in regard to privacy. And has nothing to do with hardware compatibility.
Hope that people find this kind of database useful and all the effort you guys have put in pays off. :)
-
Did install it and did run the program. Made a misstake at the end where you need to choose the webbrowser you want the page to be loaded in, resulting in getting an error that the browser could not be found. So you will get several uploads from me..sorry about that.
Agree upon the Ram info.
The usage of the harddrive isnt a problem..cant see what that has to do with privacy. Notting privat being posted, just how much of the harddrive is used. Not an issue for me here.
-
Done.
Hope it helps. :) :)

Very Nice,
Well I run it on 2 PC's to start with, hopefully useful.
(Couple of Intel Atoms)
Would be good if it could incorporate a "Bootchart"
so people could compare results for similar Hardware.

Thanks for participating folks, great feedback :)

Done.
Glad to help

I did the Do :D
But it got my clock speed wrong. It says dual core at 1399 MHz but it's a dual cure at 2600MHz.

This is great folks :) There are no privacy issues here. Every section was gone over and tested thoroughly before we launched this as a public beta.
I'll see what I can do about the ram thing. This has been the most challenging software to date. The more we add to it, the more it costs and we have to draw the line at some point for cost vs time spent.
We're unlikely to fine tune this beyond what it already does. The beta test focuses on app bugs in all areas of the code.

CPU will display the current clock speed at the time of processing. I'll look into whether inxi can show the actual chip speed.

Jerry, wouldn't Conky be a simple solution to that issue ?(memory display) Some customizations would be required (how/where to display)but this issue would be resolved.
-
It's not that simple sorry. It would require a complete rewrite of most of the code. Memory is only available in recent versions of inxi. The extra cost here is the other consideration for this.

Ok, i understand.

And uploaded both 64 and 32 bit...
:)
-
Upgraded 3 pc's to 2.8, and then added info for:
N2807(Barebones Micro PC), E3845(Barebones Micro PC) and i54200U(HP TS14 Lappy)
-
This is great! We have an amazing community here :)
Software on both sides seems to be doing its job.

Uploaded data for two 'low spec' machines, both of which run LL2.8 very successfully.
1: ASUS eeePC 901 running LL on a 32GB class 10 SDHC card
2: ASUS eeePC 701SD running LL on 8GB SSD with 16GB SDHC for data storage.
There must be thousands of these models lying dormant which can be given new life. They were originally sold with a version of linux (can't remember which), a very poor and unreliable build due to the fact that the update method quickly filled the SSD and the PC became unusable. That does not happen with LinuxLite.
:) :) :)

Took two tries but it finally posted but finally show up on web page.

-
@Coastie, why did it take two tries?
-
@Jerry, when I first uploaded info it was in afternoon Eastern Standard Time US. After about 2 hours or so, it had not showed up on the webpage so I tried again close to 17:00 EST US. I checked again and it had been posted. The posted time shows: User Submitted on 02/13/2016 14:45. If that is my time it could be my first upload and it could just be a consequence that it posted right after I uploaded it again because 14:45 could be the time I first uploaded. :-\
-
All files that get uploaded go into a queue. You only need to submit once, it will show eventually depending on queue size. Check the next day if you need to. :)
-
Done.
-
We have 39 submissions to date. This I think, is enough to confirm that the software produces the desired results. A huge thank you to everyone who participated in this! I'll set this to be the default Hardware Database page and post links to the .deb files on the web page. This will be bundled into LL 3.0 :)
-
59 submissions now :) I've asked the web dev for a quote on two new features:
- make the db searchable
- show the total count of machines submitted
The cost is a little high compared to the total cost for the original code, so I'll see if I can negotiate with him.
-
A huge thank you to Wirezfree for donating to this development. For the record (and I hope I don't embarrass him with this) Wirezfree is now the number 1 contributor in terms of total amount donated to Linux Lite. Please everyone, thank him for this!

Congrats and Thanks Wirezfree !!!
And a very knowledgeable forum contributer as well 8)

The power of donations strikes again!
We've added 2 new features to the Hardware Database. The Database is now searchable, you can use any search term or terms. We also added a Total number of computers uploaded statistic. https://www.linuxliteos.com/hardware.php (https://www.linuxliteos.com/hardware.php)

The result gives me everyone elses info but not mine. Last result shows today @ 0355. (It's now 0742.) I'll try again later. Maybe it just takes a while to load?
-
Thanks wirezfree for all the love you give this distro. You pay it forward like a stand up dude in my book.
-
Very nice, the search feature looks to be a very useful addition to the database.
Thank you Wirezfree for all you do on the forum, and for Linux Lite. :)
-
Seems to be working fine - 1 desktop and three laptops added = HP, Tosh, Fujitsu Siemens x2
Ideal solution to a data collecting problem . Output ideal for prospective linux newbies. Tks to all :)
-
Thanks for Thanks... :) :-[
I would rather donate to LL, and feel part of community,
than give my money to some faceless giant...
-
Four comps added today, one additional will do tomorrow.
-
Added 3 more PC's after doing the 2.6 > 2.8 update, inc a friends NUCi7
-
Thanks folks. The LLHDB is looking great thanks to your contributions.

Just added mine too -but a question.
Does the program inxi remain on our computers indefinitely and keep updating the dbase in case we make any hardware changes?

If you remove inxi, you remove the Lite Info. Lite Info only sends information when you tell it to. Nothing works without your interaction.

I see. . . I guess it's not a bad thing if we keep sharing the info if we update our hardware. Though in my case, this rather old computer is on its last legs (it was running XP) so very little upgrade can be done to it.
Thanks to Lite, it has gotten a true makeover :).
-
It might feel to some as an insignificant contribution but let me assure you all, this matters to people who seek answers.

Just added a new device,
The HP Stream 11,
Everything shows but not the Drives/Partitions info.
