Title: Lite Control Center - Suggestions welcomed
Post by: Jerry on July 09, 2015, 01:09:56 AM
Introducing the Linux Lite Control Center.

This is the culmination of months of work by a number of Linux Lite developers both inside and outside the project.
Before I begin, I'd like to personally thank the following people for their fantastic efforts in bringing this original concept to a finished state:

John 'Shaggytwodope' Jenkins - original GUI design and coding
Brian 'DarthLukan' Tomlinson - Python Developer extraordinaire
Milos 'Misko_2083' Pavlovic - Linux Lite Developer
Jerry Bezencon - Linux Lite Developer
Josh Erickson - Developer

Each of these people played a crucial role in the Control Centers development. It could not progress the way it did without any of them, so thank you :)

The original idea was to have one central place where people could configure just about anything on Linux Lite. The Linux Lite equivalent of the Windows Control Panel if you like, but better ;) We want people to rely on one area in the OS where they could find things. The Lite Control Center aims to fulfill that.

Features

System Information:

On the main tab, we have basic system information, OS, cpu, ram, kernel, graphics and soundcard information (we have yet to test multiple sound or video card configurations)

We also include a Screenshot button. This will take a picture of the Lite Control Center System Information tab (only), upload it to imgur.com for pasting of the url into the Forums. When you need support, we have a snaphot of your systems key hardware configuration quickly and easily.

Desktop:

Anything to do with configuring your Desktop should be here. We've also added the ability to add and remove Computer, Home, Network and Trash icons to the Desktop.

Software:

A one-stop-shop for all your software management needs.

Hardware:

A one-stop-shop for all your hardware configuration needs.

Network:

Network configuration and management.

System:

Configuration of everything system related on default Linux Lite.

The Lite Control Center is for Linux Lite 2.4+ only and we hope to have it ready for Linux Lite 2.6. It is not tested, nor will it be supported on anything lower than Linux Lite 2.4

The Lite Control Center does not add program icons to the Lite Control Center as you install applications. The only buttons displayed are the ones we provide on a vanilla Linux Lite install.

Once installed, you can find Lite Control Center in Menu, Settings, Lite Control Center.

We'd like as many people as possible to install and test this with us. To install the Lite Control Center:

Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install lite-controlcenter
This software should be considered beta quality and although it has gone through numerous tests, we need to widen our test field to ensure the best possible quality at release time.

Of course we welcome your feedback and any features you'd like added :)

From the entire development team, thank you :)

Sorry for my bad English...  :)

Thanks to all developers of LL for very good distro :)

About some incorrect info in Lite Control Center: Internet 4G-connection is On, but Control Center says, that Internet: Not connected. :)

Very impressive! Congrats to the team!

May I please ask for clarification of the menu planned for 2.6 when the Lite Control Center will be fully integrated? Will there still be "Settings" and "System" showing up in the menu? Or am I correct in assuming that both will be replaced by a new entry "Lite Control Center"?

Thanks for the huge effort guys! :)

"Settings" and "System" will remain.

Thanks Jerry for letting us know.

One important reason I install Linux Lite on others' computer is the simplistic, clear approach.
I always considered as area for improvement the menu, specifically the "Settings" and "System" category. Just have a look at the different places to configure the screensaver/ power settings.
In addition to these two categories we already have the "Settings Manager" which represents just a different arrangement of existing menu entries.

The hope was to get this all simplified by having the "Lite Control Center", replacing all three and having a one-stop-shop for everything. Now it looks like we're getting an additional menu entry, partly just another arrangement of already existing menu entries.

As great as it looks, as much potential as it has, I don't want to confront my users with a forth possibility to perform some setting/ system work. Especially while confusing entries like screensaver/ power settings are not sorted out and menu entries are in the wrong category - in my opinion. For example, Firewall configuration, Install Drivers and Lite Upgrade are clear System tasks of the System administrator. They shouldn't be under Settings where I expect the normal user to configure his/her DE/session whithout the need for root permissions.

Thanks

Looks good. Installed it and tested it out. When i click on one of the buttons on the system information page my webrowser (chrome) opens, so far so good, but the lite control center screen goes grey then. It stays grey until i close chrome. When i open chrome manually this doesnt happen.
I guess the translation into different languages will be done later?

At some point in the future, yes.

Looks great.
Could you also show the external I.P address on the information page? Maybe even the gateway address would be useful for newer users that can't remember their router address :)

@Trip, how's this?

Not sure if the Internet IP Address is a good idea though. The screenshot tool is used as support for people, they may forget to grey out their ip address. Seems like we'd be putting people at risk and also asking them to do more than they should be doing.

Good idea to roll up control items into a new control panel, particularly the Software items. I was always selecting the wrong one from the Menu when I was a new user.

The main point I'd make is the Desktop view doesn't seem quite right.

It includes both the Add and Remove option for several common icons, and presents those option irrespective of whether the icon is already installed or not. Plus the options appear to be randomly distributed.

Perhaps a better idea might be to firstly group the options then use a tick box to indicate install, which would also reflects the current status.

Looks really good. Detects all my hardware and works smooth. But when I click on a button in the software tab the selected application opens up fine but the control center window turns blank until the chosen application is closed.

Nice! I have had no issues, everything seems to work as expected. Only one small suggestion, maybe a button to launch "hardinfo" on the system overview page marked as full system info. Other than that everything looks great so far. Outstanding job to the team. :)

All working fine, i5 Laptop.
Just echo the comments on:
Memory, indicates 15GB vs 16GB, possibly because it takes in account the reserved ram for graphics.??
Add/Remove options, placement, bit OCD, but I agree

Great work guys...

Brilliant but you could be right about it showing them all the time.
How hard would it be to change them to a show info button?

Some of the easier to implement changes applied.

- Gateway info under Internet on System Information tab
- Report tool on System Information tab

I'd suggest to give the screenshot and system report icon a more prominent position, in a second row above the social media links.

Nice job guys,I tried it out, it's really nice looking.

Just one thing tho and i'm just nit picking here but is it possible to get custom themes we  have added ourselves, to change the color of Linux Lite Control Center that we have loaded.

I'm using a theme called MediterraneanDarkest which is an all black theme and notice the Control Center ignores it and doesn't change to the theme color.

Again i'm just nit picking here.

Edit: Spoke too soon, i closed chrome and control center. Opened control center and greying out problem was there again.

I also notice an issue when i use Light Locker with Lite Control Center, when I change settings in Light Locker and click apply and right after I close it. It freezes my Lite Control Center, causing it to crash.

The Help link opens using my default browser, Chromium.  The others (Forum, Website, Facebook, Twitter, Google+, LinkedIn, Screenshot, and Report) open using Chrome.  Also for those links that open with Chrome, the Lite Control Center goes gray (except for the title bar) until I close the Chrome window opened by the link.

Hi,

I installed the Lite Control Center and was getting screen refresh issues, like going into the User manager from the Control Center and then trying to move that window around, the stuff underneath wasn't refreshing correctly.

Also, going into the software section of your Control Center, under "Guide" I see 5 things but down below there are 6 things which seem out of order, that might be confusing for new users.

Anyway, just wanted to provide some feedback.

@glin22 the software section is consistent with similar layouts throughout Linux Lite for an example look in the "Settings Manager"  it reads from left to right like english.

Issue I reported still exists.  The first link (the Help link) opens with my default browser, Chromium.  The second link (the Forum link) before opening gave a popup window allowing me to select my browser of choice.  I chose Chromium and the window still opened with Chrome.  The Linux Lite Control Center window would gray out until I closed the opened Chrome window.  The same result occurs with each subsequent link.

When LL CC was first introduced, my memory showed 8GB
After first update, memory showed 7.7GB
Now memory shows 7890 MB

Still having the issue of the Help link being the only one to open using my default browser of Chromium.  The others open in Chrome.

Good news to report:  The LL CC window doesn't gray out anymore when opening those links.

The way in which we have dealt with showing the total memory is the best option out of all the methods we have tried. This method is consistent across all hardware types, which in the end, is what we have to be, consistent. This includes pc's with mixed amounts of memory, eg. 512mb, 1.5gb, 2gb+

Can you run lite-controlcenter from the terminal, click what you usually click to reproduce that issue. Then close Lite CC and paste the output from the terminal to your next post. Thanks.

This new addition should really take LL to the next level. I imagine that when Jerry starts asking for translations of the Control Center text into different languages, multi-language support for Lite Control Center will be close to being implemented...

Hello!

My IP doesn't show up in LCC or in the forums, but that could be because when I check my own IP address, it comes back as IPv6 - something that might warrant a look-see, or I might just have to use 'Use IPv4 addresses only' to connect...

The code being used to show the ip isn't taking ipv6 into consideration I think, needs to be looked into.

Also, I think the screenshots of control center with ip's are bad. Even more so with ipv6... it can contain some nasty hardware info. Which can ofc be used against folks. Maybe some kind of psa for users needs to be in place... show some caution with sharing ip's.

Hello!

This new addition should really take LL to the next level. I imagine that when Jerry starts asking for translations of the Control Center text into different languages, multi-language support for Lite Control Center will be close to being implemented...

In thoery this shouldn't be to hard, most of the code parses everything in a somewhat modular way. But... ewww effort lol.

I'm with you on this. It's kinda risky to use screenshot + ip's. What we need is just a status. "Active" when connected and "Not Connected".
I just managed to fix all the issues with ip-adress information. :)
But maybe we should remove them for user safety.
If someone uses NAT in a Virtual machine this will print out the exact internet IP address of the computer. Not a good combination with screenshooter definitely.

Actually, what might be worth considering in the future is a click to reveal type thing. There is a bit of css already to expand content. Damned if I remember what line tho lol. So that the element with the ip is only shown when clicked, and the status is default. How to do this escapes me atm, but worth doing in the todo list.

Wonderfull idea shaggytwo. Frontend will handle that with just a few lines of css. I'll add the button to Toogle the appearance of IP's. Also clicking the button will hide the screenshot icon while the IP's are shown. Two flies with one shot. :)
I might add some warning also. Just to be sure.

I like this method, Not sure about the wording of the warning. I'd hit up Jerry on that, it's what hes good at lol. As for hiding the screenshot Icon, spot on idea. Two birds with one stone indeed. But come to think of it, it may be hard for some users to then use it to send in info for one reason or another.

Just a thought here but why not just show which interface(s) is/are active instead of ip addresses?

Hello!

OK, Jerry, here goes...

Another thing about 'Show/Hide IP' is that people might consider this to be hiding their IP address from others. Of course, those who know a little bit about that know better, but someone fresh from XP might not...

So it looks like SOMETHING is acting up here.

run this, and then upload the file aptdump.txt here or pastebin etc.
Code: [Select]
apt-config dump > aptdump.txt
And if you would be so kind, create a system report (either in control center or located in the menu MENU>SYSTEM> CREATE SYSTEM REPORT)

This will let me see some of the things installed on your setup and figure what's causing this conflict.

Figuring this out is always a headache lol. But have you added any repos since your initial install?

If you have can you run
Code: [Select]
apt-cache policy > aptpolicy.txt
and upload aptpolicy.txt for me.

When you run update, do you see ANY errors? Can you copy/paste all the output from running
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get update
Lastly, can you run
Code: [Select]
ls -l /var/lib/apt/periodicAnd share that output.

My first thought was use of a 3rd party apt tool at one stage, but that seems fine. All the post install config stuff is still fairly default. But atm I'am thinking something is failing when update is run, if not all the db stuff is fetched it may cause the update trigger to not execute. Thanks for the time spent trying to solve this.

I only added the Spotify and Inkscape repos as far es I can remember.
The Spotify repo causes some errors when updating. They come and go and since Spotify doesn't get many updates I tend to ignore it.

Code: [Select]

GPG error: http://repository.spotify.com stable InRelease:

When you installed did you run
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-key adv --keyserver hkp://keyserver.ubuntu.com:80 --recv-keys D2C19886
They have been known to change their key time to time, a bad practice lol. Give that command a run, and repeat the update command as before. And lemme know if the same error occurs.

For the record this is the issue, when a failure occurs the file wont be run. Basicly if successful do > update file. So the repo isn't being updated proper. Causing this odd bug. It's been reported to apt upstream, hopefully gets fixed lol.

Wonderful, just some advice.. when you have an issue with a repo and it mentions the key/signature like that. Please tell us, or look at the upstream vendor for that repo. It's extremely unsafe for you the user.

Lets say spotify's website was hijacked or "hacked", they could inject some nasty code under the guise of the spotify client. (sounds crazy, but thats why we got signatures for the repo/deb files and stuff)

Bottomline, be safe and don't be afraid to point out errors. And thank you for the time figuring this problem out, we know what the problem is likely to be in the future.

Just a thought here but why not just show which interface(s) is/are active instead of ip addresses?
Sorry for the late reply avj.
There could be a lot of them, not much place left on the system info page
Code: [Select]
ifconfig -a | sed 's/[ \t].*//;/^\(lo\|\)$/d'
eth0
eth1
eth2
ovs-system
ovsbr0
vmnet1
vmnet8

That's cool, I just didn't get why you guys didn't just show the hardware like in the devices section rather than have another section for internet.  I understand sometimes you just have something different in mind than what would seem obvious to others.  No big deal.  :)

As for Control Center grouping of the icons would be a good idea. Especially in the case when there is a lot of them. It would be easier to spot the one you need. It could slow down application start for a few % but the gain may be worth the trip.

Hello!

You people have done a super job on the Control Center!

38 C (100 F) plus high humidity. I know how that feels, man - we've had such conditions in the Southeastern US recently, also. However, that is the normal weather for time of year.

I hope you have A/C there, and that it's working as it should! I also hope the teams you're pulling for are victorious...

Couple suggestions

1. The Help icon at top right corners for Desktop, Software, Hardware, and System. How about making it so when you highlight the Help Icon with your cursor, it says Help underneath it. So people know what it is without having to click on it.

It does it for the Help icon in the System Information, I suggest it does it for the other tabs also.

and

2. How about giving us the option to minimize the Guide section in the Software tab, for people who don't need it.

Update: 1.0-0120

Instead of listing all the changes between builds, I'm just going to add the commits link to each announcement so you can read about all of the changes that are happening in development as they occur. Most notable change in this build is the renaming of the 'System Information' tab to 'My Computer'.

Thanks for your concern, nothing wrong with electricity here.
We use 220-230V 50Hz for everything.
sockets are maybe different from the ones you have in US

We're looking to use a contrasting background to help seperate the different sections of the Lite Control Center.
Which one do you like from the samples below?

Sample 2.

Sample 1 is still a little too dark. Feels a bit claustrophobic.
Sample 3 looks good with the current wallpapers, as most seem to have light blue in them. It wouldn't work as well if you were to change the wallpapers though.

Sample 2's a good middle ground with the neutral colours and it looks very professional IMO.

I actually like it the way it is!

The white lettering of the categories gives just enough contrast to be noticeable, and the consistent background of the categories on the left provides a good border.  It focuses my eyes on the content to the right.

I like it the way it is, but if I have to select from the 3 choices, for my reasons above, I would select choice 1.  The other two choices have the categories on the left and the content on the right blend in too much.  The result is a "where do I look first" feeling.

This is more an aesthetics thing and maybe it's wanted but when switching between the tabs on the side the whole top panel swooshes up and done again changing the title and tab description. Just the help button stays where it is.

Hi Jerry,
This may show my lack of knowledge(naivety), on what you/dev's have to do to maintain these tools..??
Could you not have a "Choice" in "Lite Tweaks" for "Light" or "Dark" Control panel..??

Guys, decided to write a python3 script which will open a gtk3+ window from which desktop icons can be added and removed by simply clicking the switch.
There are quite a few icons in the desktop tab this could save some space.
Code: [Select]
#!/usr/bin/env python3
#xfce4-desktop icons switch, Misko
from gi.repository import Gtk
import os
import sys
from subprocess import Popen
from gi.repository.GdkPixbuf import Pixbuf

#Temporary window icon don't forget to change!
icon="/usr/share/pixmaps/Thunar/Thunar-about-logo.png"

class XfDesktopIconsWindow(Gtk.Window):

    def __init__(self):
        Gtk.Window.__init__(self, title="Xfce Desktop Icons")

Also added and option to show/hide removable drives.
Might need some work but this is working fine so far.

Great idea, it is quite a "busy" screen.
So a "New" single icon "Manage Desktop Icons" would launch what you show above.

Thanks, I haven't had communication with Jerry in the last few days. Maybe he would preffer using web tehnologies in the frontend that would communicate with stuff in the backend rather than launching a separate application.

Yes, that's the way it works. There is a plan to add a refresh button. It should do some stuff in the backend when receives a call from the frontend.

Well, there is a very small time frame when we can meet. One is when I'm about to go to sleep and the other one is when you're about to sleep. 18000 km is a big distance. Still preety amazing that we can Tox from time to time. :)
Added a button to refresh the application and fixed the live cd issue you found earlier.

I notice the Control Center has today's date in green where it says Last Updated.  But I didn't update today.  If there are no updates by tomorrow, I get the feeling it'll have tomorrow's date in green next to Last Updated.

I'm ok with it.  I can read between the lines.  But it does make it seem, to manual updaters like me, that I took an action today to update, when I did not.

I reported this before.  It seems it is still occurring.  I have Chromium as my default browser.  I did use the Lite Tweak tool to set it as such.  But only the Help link at the bottom of the My Computer tab in the Control Panel opens using Chromium.  All the other links open in Chrome, which I also have installed.

The help icon opens in chromium, as in the one that opens a local copy of the manual?

If that is the case, it sounds like exo-open is being funny... not fully sure we should stick with this method. Will look into alternatives soon.

It opens the help manual in Chromium.  I don't recall if it was a local copy or if it was the Internet copy.  I'm not at my pc right now.  The rest open in Chrome.

Interesting... What is the output of the next line?
Code: [Select]
cat /etc/gnome/defaults.list | grep "text/html"Maybe Chromium is set to open html files. If so, editing /etc/gnome/defaults.list should be easy.

I really like the main page information in the control center. The only problem I have is that it says "GPU: Advanced Micro Devices", instead of my actual GPU. But I believe this will be resolved.

Sound Card only says: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] Azalia Audio Controller
Instead of an actual model.

I really like Linux Lite, other distros claim to be user friendly, but I feel like Linux Lite is doing it the best way. Control Center, easy SAMBA sharing settings, great manual, Lite Tweaks, + some other stuff.

Can you share a system report (in the menu like so, Menu>System>Create System Report) Either attaching here or emailing to me be fine.

Also inaccurate Sound Card info :P It doesn't show the model, only name.

torreydale, but why report vendor only? Glitch? Some programs report my GPU as Gallium 0.5 on R515 blah blah something like that.

When's a word about GPUs... Why Windows reported my GPU has 256 MB, and GNU/Linux says 128MB? (Windows sometimes said 128MB, but mainly 256 almost all the time)... With proprietary drivers... Some Websites claim X2300 has 256MB, some says 128MB... Confused, guess I should trust Linux in this.

Btw great work on the Control Center, the info about the computer on the main page is very useful.

Kernels - we address held packages in the Manual. Any held kernels will be in the Final.

Oh, Chromium is default. Sorry I lost track from all the posts.
2 options:
1. You can use lite tweaks to set your default browser. (recommended)
2. Edit the settings file manually
Code: [Select]
gksudo leafpad /etc/gnome/defaults.listand replace all occurances of google-chrome.desktop; with chromium-browser.desktop;

I decided to try setting my default browser to chrome and had the same situation with only the help link opening in chrome, and the other links opening in firefox. After a little digging I also made the change in preferred applications and that seems to have solved the problem.

This is looking and working great. Nice job to everybody involved.

On the first screen it might be useful to let the user know what version of Ubuntu Lite's based on.
This is really useful for when your trying to download drivers from company websites or looking for upto date tutorials..
Based on: Ubuntu 14.04.3 LTS (trusty)

@Scott, no way to configure this atm other than hacking the code (/usr/share/litecc/frontend/css/main.css) search in the file for 'font' and have a play. OFC you'd lose this setting after an LLCC upgrade so depending on your bash skills, you could always right a small script to sed the changes after each update :)

Where does the information for the storage come from? At least for me it kinda inaccurate.
I have a 500gb HD split into 3 partitions. 100 gb for /, 396 gb for /home and 4 gb as swap. The control center says I have 455 gb of total storage and it changes every time I plug in some any kind of storage device (SD card, USB, ext HDD ect.).

Not sure how we can improve on this, needs more research. Try:

Bytes:

Code: [Select]
jerry@z800:~$ df | grep '^/dev/[hs]d' | awk '{s+=$2} END {print s}'
2408682717

MB:

Code: [Select]
jerry@z800:~$ df | grep '^/dev/[hs]d' | awk '{s+=$2} END {print s/1048576}'
2297.1
jerry@z800:~$

See what happens to the total bytes when they get converted to MB.

I'm going to post here with any changes or ideas with control center. At this time I may change button style a bit,  a video of it in action here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=agm8jgh_sVM (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=agm8jgh_sVM)

This is not finalized tho, may revert back to old style.

To note changes since the last release update (1.0-0270):
- Error dialog if running more then once instance, as well as if no module data is found.
- Minor code fixes, porting to new version of python.
- Refactored how memory is calculated, this should be considerably more reliable.
- General code clean up, if any issues occur please report.
- Update count and misc scripts are removed, most of the data is now done internally.
- I may have missed something....

Nothing is finalized until it's tagged for next release, ideas are welcomed but no promises made.

Here is the screenshot:

The only big notable change is hiding the count when its zero... waste of space really.  Everything else seems to work as expected. Some features and ideas to come eventually when time is found. But for now this will be the next release... have fun :-p

On the LLCC ~ Desktop Tab, not sure if it's possible.??
To save some screen space, make it less busy.

Instead of having 2 items, like "Add Computer Icon" and then "Remove Computer Icon"
Could it be a "Toggle" function, "Tap to Add", "Tap to Remove"

Just a thought...
