5.0 Linux Lite Kernel is now available for 32 & 64bit machines.

'If it ain't broke...' If you don't need this kernel for a specific reason, don't install it!

These kernels are built for:

- Series 4.x (diamond/bionic 64bit only)
- Series 3.x (citrine/xenial)
- Series 2.x (beryl/trusty) - NB: No more kernels for this Series.

See here for an overview of what's new - https://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=linux-2019-features&num=1

Open a terminal and do:

Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install linux-headers-linuxlite-5.0.0 linux-image-linuxlite-5.0.0 -y
If you prefer the point-and-click option, go to Menu, System, Lite Tweaks and select Kernel Installer.

NOTE: If you use proprietary drivers, this kernel may break functionality with those drivers. If you have proprietary drivers installed and you still decide to go ahead with this kernel install, you should be competent in repairing your drivers. If you aren't, DO NOT install this kernel.

IMPORTANT: Only install this kernel if you need it or if you are adept at getting out of trouble from a TTY.

To celebrate this, a new milestone in Linux Kernel releases, we offer this one off working kernel, the first of the 5.0 Series.

I've thought about using the proprietary binaries. Past experience was messy, but that was some years back.

By the way, I made an attempt to implement the 4.16 kernel on my main workstation, with a GeForce GT 730 video card and dual monitors, following up with the installation of the 390.48 proprietary PPA-provided driver. It worked, except LL 3.8 wouldn't recognize the existence of the second monitor. So I'm back to the 4.4 kernel. I've stayed with the 390.48 driver, though--no problems at this time.

It appears to me that if I had a single monitor output this would have worked. Good news for some. Oh well...another time, then.

Thanks for your help, Jerry.

@pmbenterprises this is the reason we put the nVidia disclaimer in. If a person decides to try their luck, they need to be able to get out of the situation on their own ie. proficient in the TTY at reversing their actions. In the past I myself, have used the latest kernel with the latest nVidia .run file, that's been my preference. Easy to undo a mess that way.

I've installed 4.16 on two laptops, one with an old Intel dual-core and the other with a dual-core AMD, through the Linux Lite Tweaks applet. Update was super simple and both now are actually running faster than with the 4.4.0-122 previous kernels. I have two workstations to consider updating, both running proprietary NVIDIA GPU drivers. Obviously, I'm concerned with driver breakage. Can you tell me whether the NVIDIA repo drivers have been corrected to work with 4.16? Or can anyone else in this forum tell me if they have had success (no driver breakage) with 4.16? TIA

FYI - as of June 1st 2018, only 64bit kernels will be compiled.

Hope you don't mind Jerry. I fly differently than some computer users Here.   So when wanting a i386 kernel. I grab them from here.
