Title: Linux Lite 3.6 64bit ISO with Language Support Test
Post by: Jerry on October 25, 2017, 05:48:14 AM
Hi everyone,

Languages are getting a lot of love lately  :-*

As previously stated, I'm starting to do some early work on Series 4.x
As the title states, I've created a Linux Lite 3.6 64bit (only) ISO with Language Support. I'd like some volunteers to install this in their native language.

- Select your Language at the start of the install.
- If it isn't already selected on the map slide of the installer, please make sure you select your correct Timezone/City. This will ensure that on the next slide, your correct language is selected and installed.

Because this installs your correct language during install, the install will take anywhere from 5 to 20 mins longer than our standard installer, depending on your system specs. This is because it needs to download all the additional language packs for your language. After a reboot for example, Gimp should be in your native language.

Once you've booted for the first time after the install, you'll be faced with a dialogue window that will ask if you want to change your folder names too, please do this.
There will of course be some Menu items that are not translated, Linux Lite applications, the My Computer sub menu, etc. Most of your system should be in your native language.

This is for non-UEFI and Secure boot systems. You can if you like, install in a VM, but I would prefer real hardware.

Download - http://repo.linuxliteos.com/isotests/linux-lite-3.6-languages-64bit.iso (http://repo.linuxliteos.com/isotests/linux-lite-3.6-languages-64bit.iso)

Filename: linux-lite-3.6-languages-64bit.iso
Size: 1.1Gb
MD5SUM: 41df4c6d4ddc06f2127f7def63455b24

The Grub Live boot menu is very basic (text only). This is deliberate, as I'm avoiding pouring dozens of hours into something that might not work for everyone.

You will see the word 'Ubuntu' instead of 'Linux' or 'Linux Lite' on the installer, just ignore this. The installer slides have not been translated.
Should you need it, the live login user is: ubuntu, no password required.

I've downloaded French pack tonight.  First impression is this is a lot easier to install than the normal language pack.  I really like its usability.
I'm North American so I did have to change the time zone, from Paris to Toronto.  Repositories were US, I changed it to Canada.  And that's it.  Didn't take more time for me to install so that's good.
Most of Whisker Menu is French, except some entries in System

but this only occurs in Menu, not in the actual files or programs.
This will be a great addition to LL4.0
Edit: tested in Virtual Machine only

Hi @Jerry !

Installed LL special version in french. Then all updates
When installing Language in french I usually leave folders with defaults names.
This time I said yes to the language requester asking if I wanted to change them.
and when I rebooted, this shows up (same on Official version after changing language) :

Nothing else for now.

Cheers!

Try deleting /home/YOURUSER/.config/dconf/user

That seems to work, thanks!
But have to remove "My Computer" in the Whisker menu because everything inside pointed to previous locations and gave .URI errors when clicked.

Cheers!

There is still the issue of Lite tools and other program staying in English.
It's better than "standard" version though.
I can do screenshots of the main Linux Lite Menus, etc. and circle untranslated stuff but is this useful?
If some programs are not available in multilingual versions, or don't have translated descriptions, options seem limited.

@Jerry does Linux Lite dev have to chose a few main "officially" supported language or the problem is more with the package manager?
If a choice is needed - from World use of language :
- English, Spanish, French than German, Russian and Māori ;)
Actually Mandarin is first but I I still checked demographics a little...
Or if the idea is getting tracking, maybe going the democratic way and having a vote?

I'm unsure what you're asking here. Lost in translation :)

Oh, yeah, sorry I tend to wander at times!
I meant mainly that Linux Lite in French (and I can only guess other language) still has lots of texts and Programs in English.

I'm no programmer but can only guess that doing translations is a huge workload and can sometimes be related to things out of Linux Lite's control. Sooo, do we just "flag" what is not translated in a "plain" install?
I could do a little English-French translations, if needed of course!

The "official languages" I mentioned was, for example, if a program is chosen to be distributed by default in a "Languages" version of Linux Lite, one criteria would be to have this program available in English, Spanish and French. If it's not, another program is chosen... This in order to prevent language discrepancies when choosing a "supported language".

I know I talk a lot, my mother tells me all the time ;)

Cheers!
