Title: Old Lady- New to Linux
Post by: Just J on June 09, 2018, 08:23:45 PM
Hi, I've been downloading different Linux distros for some time but had problems with all until Linux Lite!!! My old computer just couldn't handle any other distro. but I just installed Linux Lite 4.0 today with no problems.

Of course I have a ton of questions as I haven't had a chance to play yet and don't speak 'Linux' at all, but I promise to search for answers before posting any dumb questions!

This is really exciting as I've wanted to switch to Linux for a very long time.  I'm well past retirement but have liked computers since I first discovered them.  Now that I'm retired, I have a little more time to learn more and hope this forum is a good place to do that.

J, you have made a great choice. Linux Lite is the best Linux OS for Windows users. It's the easiest to use, most stable and the forum is great

Welcome!

Thank you all for the warm welcome.

Nice to see there are other retired folks here as it gives me hope that learning Linux isn't out of the question for me!

Welcome!

Don't worry - I honestly feel Linux is easier to use for a newcomer than Windows 10 !

We had an extended family member who is retired, staying with us for a couple of weeks, when it was time for her to catch her return flight she wanted to print out her boarding pass here. Sure, I said, and turned on the printer. That was literally all I had to do, turn on the printer. She did everything else on my Linux machine without me even needing to hover. She printed it out and had no problems.

Likewise I was playing a DVD of some school materials for a 9 yr old. He asked if the laptop was a chromebook, and I said no, it was Linux. He reached out to the mouse and changed the volume, without ever having used Linux before. It's so intuitive that things are easy to figure out even if someone isn't familiar with Linux.

By contrast, on Windows 10 if you want to open a program, you need to click on the left menu and there's a long alphabetical list of things you can do. Good luck to those who want to run something starting with Z, for example, lots of scrolling.

I think you will like Linux because you can extend things and customize your system so much more than on anything else. There is always more to learn on Linux if you want to, you will never be bored with it! For example if you find yourself doing repetitive tasks on your Linux machine, you can use scripting to automate these things. Yet if you don't want to do that yet, that's OK - you can still use Linux point-and-click for everything you want to do (in fact that's what I do 99% of the time anyway).

If you have questions just ask! I've received help on the forums with my questions, and everyone has been nice.

A warm welcome :) Enjoy the LL journey.
PS. No such thing as old, it's all just an attitude of mind, that is of course until the body starts falling apart, LOL ...

Welcome to the forum, here is another Linux Lite newbie.
Congratulations for choosing LL, this seems to be the best Operating System for personal use,
as far as I have had time to use it - a couple of days only - but no problems whatsoever so far.

And more than that, congrats for the retirement!
Have fun with LL and have a nice and warm summer.

Thanks again to all of you.

Paul, I absolutely detest Windows 10 and can't wait for the warranty to run out on that computer so I can install Linux!!!!  Hope I learn how to operate Linux distros quickly before changing.  Getting around isn't so bad but some things are so different!!!!
