Linux Lite newbie

Hello!

From what I've read so far, getting Intel graphics to work in Ubuntu in general is a difficult proposition. It's especially difficult right now because Intel no longer supports the 12.04 kernels, and Intel hasn't released an update to support the latest kernel yet. (The latest kernel just came out about three weeks ago.)

I'm still working on it, but I'm really hampered by not having a machine here with that chipset to work with...

Thanks for the response Rob. It's an Intel MB with onboard graphics - 82845G/GL/GE/PE/GV Graphics Controller. It's late here, so tomorrow I'll run the commands you posted and come back with the results. Thanks again!

Welcome to Linux Lite. It's easier for others to help you if we know what video card is involved.

In a terminal window [CTRL-ALT-T], run these commands:


--- Code: ---sudo update-pciids
lspci | grep -E "VGA|3D"
--- End code ---

and post the output here.

Since this is a video issue, this post may end up being moved to the Hardware > Video Cards area of the forum...

Just wanted to say hello to the forum. I'm not new to open source software, but definitely a greenhorn when it comes to any OS outside of Windows. I have an old XP machine I'm trying to revive with Linux Lite. After a few tries I finally managed to burn a live cd, but the desktop will only partially appear unless I boot into safe graphical mode. So I guess I have to start off with a newbie question...it runs great off the cd in sgm, but does that mean my graphics chip is not sufficient to run Linux Lite normally? I really want to get this installed on my machine, but I want to make sure it's going to be usable after installation. I was wondering if perhaps there's a driver configuration that can be done that will make it work? Any help would be appreciated. I'm really anxious after taking the tour, to get this thing goin. Thanks!
