Title: How to get the proper Support you are seeking
Post by: Jerry on March 29, 2019, 09:20:02 PM
Folks lately, some of you including those that have been around for a very long time are side stepping the first port of call in seeking support for some Software issues.

I'm going to sticky this post and remind people of the steps to take. From the Help Manual, Start page:

This excerpt has been in the Help Manual since day one.

This is how it all works.
If you are having any trouble with the Software Linux Lite produces like Lite Software, Lite Tweaks etc then please, post here on the Forums in the first instance. We are the developers of Lite Tweaks. We are obliged to support it. Just like Firefox or VLC are obliged to support users of their software.
If you are having any trouble with any other Software including XFCE and the programs available for install in Lite Software you should be contacting the developers directly via their respective Support channels. Can you imagine to date, how many bugs, fixes Companies/Organizations have missed out on fixing/seeing because people here have posted on these Forums and nowhere else? We're talking about crashes, bugs, general questions etc. Those communities deserve to see your information before anyone else.

If you have posted in a Support section and you are not directly seeking support for a piece of software, your thread will most likely be moved to a non Support section of the Forums like On Topic.

I (Jerry) don't do personal Support requests, sorry. It's actually better if you post on the main Forums in the appropriate section where everyone has a chance to respond.

I'll add to this from time to time should people require more specifics.

Cheers,

Jerry :)

You know Jerry it seems to me that the 4.xx series has proved to be a quite a success when it comes to general stability. The forum seems to rarely produce any significant user problems, certainly much less than in the past. I have never been a fan of Canonical's frenetic development schedule, but LL seems to have handled it well. I think it may be that many not very technically saavy users have gained in confidence with LL and have gone on to experiment a bit with alterrnative applications, so in a way LLs success may contribute a bit to some of the absurd implementations users try to make.

I worked as a gas station attendant when I was 17, and one night a middle aged woman and her daughter pulled up on the drive. I asked "Fill 'er up?" and she replied "Just five bucks worth." I put the gas in her car and walked back to her window to get payment. She handed me a five, and then asked if I knew the area well. I replied that I did know the area, and she asked me for directions to the freeway showing me a piece of a map. I studied the map a moment and then replied "You can't get there from here." and turned away and began to wash her windshield. A few minutes passed, and then she started laughing realizing the joke. I gave her directions and she went on her way.

It's probably human nature to not accept a statement like "You can't get there from here." after encountering such a successful experience with Linux Lite.

Nice story. One part of me wants people to be able to post whatever issue they may be having here. The other, more sensible part of me, wants people to develop logical habits. As hard as a journey that will be, I know everyone will eventually arrive at the same destination :)

Hi,

I do internet seaches everyday since I see weird computer problems almost daily.
But, I have posted questions in the Linux Lite forums also because the community here frequently gives that little extra to help you along the Linux path.
Its like in real life, I may check out the flyers but I prefer to go to the local stores which are usually more "human/friendly" (Linux Lite Forums) than commercial mega stores like Wall-ly Marts (G00gle, etc.).

Of course, RTFM still applies though ;) hehe

Cheers!

BUMP: A reminder to all of what constitutes a Support request and what doesn't. Remember, if we provide the software or feature, it'll be a Support request. If you're asking a question, eg. what's the best color to paint my Linux Lite laptop, that is NOT a support request. Myself and others grow tired, especially with those of you who have been here a long time, of moving threads to the proper Forum Section. I'm instructing all Mods to just delete these threads from now on. I know that seems harsh, but enough is enough and it is the only way some learn. If you post, and it's gone the next hour or day, you'll now know why. Think before you post. Cheers :)

Hi!

Sometimes issues overlap different forum sections, I go logically but to new users these could also sometimes be based on a underlying issue not known by them, etc.
Hope some posts will get the "lenient" treatment and be moved instead. ;)

(Oooh, just got a little earthquake IRL before sending... didn't know my post was that important, LoL!)

There will ofc, be leniency for new people. That's a given. For those that have been here a while, knowing there will be leniency will just act as a mask for not thinking.

I would just like to know how to post a question, seems ignorant I'm sure but I'm new to all this.  I have many questions and problems that need solving so how do I navigate to get answers to my problems?
I come back to find that no one responds, I ask again, how do I post on this forum?  Am I missing something or am I only supposed to respond to someone else's post.  I need answers from those of you who are knowledgeable with Linux Lite not crickets or smart ass responses, I know I'm new but I shouldn't have to spend hours scouring posts from 2015 to 2022 to find out if someone else has the same problem.

I would just like to know how to post a question [...]

My approach is the following:

I use the "Search" box (the upper right corner). Enter keyword/key-phrase than hit "Enter" (or CR, Return). Very much like in Google search. If there is anything in the database resembling the keyword(s), you'll get a result.
If the list is too long, you can narrow the search, inspired by one title or another found in the results page.
If nothing comes out, then go to the main page and pick the nearest category that fits to whatever you want to post. You need some time to get used to the structure, but this is what happens with any forum over time. Articles and replys are added every day so there's a lot of stuff here to look for.

Generally speaking:
1. Go to Forum Index (https://www.linuxliteos.com/forums/index.php).
2. Look for a Category that has the closest match to your needs. Read the description as it might help you decide.
3. After picking the category, look for the list of posts (articles). If you find anything resembling what you are interested in, than go to the upper right corner and hit the "New Topic" button.
You'll be presented with a page containing the article (post) editor.

, seems ignorant I'm sure but I'm new to all this.
It's too harsh to say that. I have some over 20 years on Linux (various distros) and some 6 years on Linux Lite and I still consider myself "ignorant". Everybody is ignorant at some point.

I have many questions and problems that need solving so how do I navigate to get answers to my problems?
The only way I could help here, is what I just described before that I do. Takes some patience, though...

I come back to find that no one responds, I ask again, how do I post on this forum?

Well, everybody has problems. Life nowadays, becomes more and more challenging. Some people, struggle with lots of problems, some others, struggle to meet ends.
In that landscape, some see Linux Lite, as some kind of Heaven, where things are like in "The Garden of Eden".
For me at least, sometimes this is the case. Sometimes, we lack the energy to answer questions. Just be patient. Search the net, maybe you'll find an answer. I found many Linux related answers in the Arch Wiki. It's a very extensive support Encyclopedia, I might say. Try that, if nothing comes in handy here and, again, be patient.

[...] I need answers from those of you who are knowledgeable with Linux Lite not crickets or smart ass responses, [...]

I have been on this Forum for three years. I never had the chance to see "smart ass responses". Even if someone tries this approach, it's highly likely that the post will be deleted or at best, the member warned to change his attitude.
We are here to help each other and playing "the smart ass" has nothing to do with the term "help".

About posting questions

Honestly speaking, my first year here, seemed to me like a nightmare! So many categories, so many posts! Where was I supposed to look for what I needed?!
In time I got used with the structure.
And even if this looks like taking too much time, here is an approach that will work:

"Hi, guys!
I'm very confused about where to place my post so here it is. Please, help me and place (move) this post where you find it appropriate, if you find that here is off-topic.
"

With this approach, I'm sure one of the Moderators will move and explain you where he placed the post and why. Maybe even give you some hints on where to search for the appropriate section in the future.

I will end this post with a quote from one of Jerry's posts:

Hi Daryl. In your Welcome email, you would have some information about the Forums, and a number of guides including a Posting Guidelines link. Once you've posted the images correctly, we'll be able to assist you. Cheers. Regarding your Printer make and model, this link https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?t=254412 offers a solution.

This is the article Jerry refers to:

https://www.linuxliteos.com/forums/introductions/forum-posting-guidelines/msg78/#msg78 (https://www.linuxliteos.com/forums/introductions/forum-posting-guidelines/msg78/#msg78)

With those being said, I wish you a pleasant journey into the realm of Linux Lite!
