Title: Hello from the mid-South USA
Post by: circular_mews on March 15, 2019, 11:57:12 AM
Hi,

At a fast food restaurant doing initial updates in Linux-Lite and wanted to say "Hello!".

This is my first time trying Linux-Lite which I found from doing a search for a lighter desktop for my two laptops.  KDE Plasma is usually my to go desktop, but since the laptops are over 10 years old, I wanted something lighter in cpu and memory usage.  I've tried lots of distros in the past and was using Debian KDE as well as Zorin.  I recently tried Lubuntu as one of the suggested light weight distros, but I like Linux-Lite better.  Still, I'm having problems with both using VLC in a secondary monitor, some sort of QT5 bug I think.  But that is for a help thread entry.

Nice looking desktop and thanks to the hard work for those that help with it.

Got dial-up at home, so I appreciate the addition of pppconfig, as most distros have dropped support for dial up, though it is still possible to download wvdial or pppconfig from another computer and install it manually if needs be.
Glad to be here.

Hi and Welcome!

I guess thats why you're at a place with free WiFi?... Downloading a 1350MB ISO would take 57Hours on dial-up ;)
Good times!

Cheers!

Hi The Dead and elelme,

Yep, that's why I'm at a place that offers free wi-fi, the other favorite place being the library.  And yep, I've done that where I've spent four days downloading a linux distro iso.  Since we have laptops now, it makes it a bit easier.  Still, I'd rather be home doing this, but living out in the hilly country you only get a few internet options with satellite being the other flaky and much more expensive option.

Looking forward to using Linux-Lite!

Hello back to you, bitsnpcs   :)

Thanks for all the warm welcomes.

P.S.  Possibly good news on our internet end.  My husband had me do a search on mobile broadband and after doing some comparisons and research, we're going with StraightTalk and am now waiting for the hotspot device to arrive in the post.  At least give them a try, anyway.  It would be nice to cancel AT&T landline service and dial-up service  :-\  and just go with cellular data.
