Title: Hello from Coastie (again)
Post by: Coastie on February 13, 2014, 01:49:48 PM
As Valtam said I had to register again on this new forum after I found it by shortening my old bookmark url.

8) I have been using Linux Lite for about a month and using the two previous forums. I have been getting a lot of help especially from Valtam which I very much appreciate.

I started as a reluctant computer many years ago when my boss said he wanted me to keep doing the job I was assigned but my secretary would no longer type my reports. I would have to type them myself on a computer. So I learned on a DOS computer using an interface I think was called a menu. Got very good at it and help design input programs for the state. (The computer gurus made them work.) I got my own home computer with a "menu" interface over DOS, moved to Windows when it came available. Became the go-to-guy for years on computers at work as long as it did not involve DOS. Went as far as Windows XP Pro at work and XP at home. Finally after getting sick enough of virus, crashes, etc., I tried Linux for a little while then got scared off by Terminal and Synaptic Package Manager. I went to an iMac for home just before Apple stopped using PPC.

Of course now I keep getting notified by Firefox, Facebook, etc. that I need to update my software or I won't be able to use sites in the future but can't because I have a PPC. Had this computer rebuilt as below in 10/08 for my son to run Ubuntu 8.04 but he lost interest in it. Bought a new 24" monitor for this computer so now I am using it. I am not going to buy another Mac now that I am getting comfortable with Linux.

When I started up this computer it update Ubuntu 8.04 to 13.something with the Unity desktop. I hate the Unity desktop but played around with it a little then crashed it and tried Lubuntu for a while. Discovered Linux Lite and bought a DVD burner so I could install it. Linux Lite will be the OS that I am keeping. I tried a couple of dock program but not have figured out how to make the desk top without an extra program look like my Mac. Still learning on it and had to do a reinstall because I messed it up. I still avoid the Terminal because it is too much like DOS for me.

Welcome. As Valtam has said, we moved to these new forums due to the issues we had with the previous forum that Valtam copied over a couple days ago. It has been a rough week, but these forums should suit us well. Looks more modern as well.

The member list only shows 16 members. If that not all there was on old forums, can one of the old forums be used to send out e-mails informing everyone of new forum url?

I sure you could do that. Just be mindful that you don't spam people with endless emails asking to join these forums.

True. I was just thinking because I got an e-mail from Valtam notifing me of the first move to the first new forum, you might want to do it again. If I could find the new forum without even going to www.linuxliteos.com/support.html for the new link, they can find it too if they are interested.

Hi Coastie, if you want to get a Mac feel you should try installing and tinkering with Cairo dock. I don't like Macs, but I must admit, I do like Cairo.

Thanks. I tried Cairo Dock and Docky when I was using Lubuntu. I found them both overly complicated and buggy. I eventually figured how to the make LXDE make a dock at the bottom of my screen. Doing the same with XFCE on Linux Lite wasn't too difficult either. I have tried posting a screen shot of my desktop but the image is too big to post.
