Hello!

Again, I'm glad you were able to get it going.

As for myself, the reason I couldn't get my hidden LL files/folders to show up right away is because I had 'Show Hidden Files and Folders' disabled in Windows Explorer...

Hello!

My pleasure. In a word, yes.

In Linux, a program called Samba allows files to be exchanged between two Linux machines, or between a Windows machine and a Linux box. The Linux network share will be seen as a network share in Windows, also, and vice versa - at least that's how things work HERE.

With an Linux Lite laptop and a Windows 8.1 netbook side-by-side, sharing the same wireless router, I was able to follow the procedures in the Linux Lite Help Manual and successfully set up shares in both directions. To make things easier on myself, I decided to share the entire /home/%U folder. This is what Windows folks are used to seeing, and lets me share everything that isn't hidden. (Hidden folders and files are the next project.)

For me, the trick was getting the Windows side set up properly. Setting up Windows 7/8/8.1's folders through Network and Sharing Center is somewhat different than Windows XP. Now to resolve sharing issues I'm having with some of the OTHER Windows PCs I have around here...

Thanks again Rob

Just finished installing LL.  At first it didn't work ... because our WiFi network wasn't working!  Reset the modem and it all happened as everyone said it would.  Pretty happy now.

Cheers

Hello, Sire!

Welcome to Linux Lite. Perhaps someone in NZ who is familiar with that service can help you with your query.

So that your question doesn't just 'get lost' within this thread, and to better assist others who may share your issue, it might be best to break this new query off into a separate help request that is outside of the intro section.

I know I'm a fine one to talk; I should have directed my previous answer to the appropriate area in the first place. For THAT oversight, apologies to Valtam...

Thanks N4RPS.

Just a quick question ... as we head out the door to Father-Inlaws Birthday lunch:

Are files on Linux Lite able to be shared through a Router or WiFi network?  Either LL to/from LL, or LL to/from Windows.
(Just a yes or no would be fine ... I can track down, or get pointed too, the "how" a bit later.)

Cheers

Hi Guys
Total Linux Newbie here.
I've been haunted by Windows 8 issues ... Apples are too expensive ... so I've decided see why life the Penguins is rated so highly.
I like the idea of a Light OS and, fingers crossed, I'll be able to breath some life into some old machines.   Hopefully this old Orchardist turned Jam Maker wont annoy everyone all at the same time!
As a small aside, I was reading about Linux and Viruses this morning and really like the reason why Linux machines need Anti-Virus programs ... to make sure any file that is passed on to a Windows based machine is clean!  That sort of outward facing logic appeals to me.
Cheers
Tony
