Title: Wine does not work in New Install
Post by: wyldekey on October 13, 2015, 10:22:38 AM
I recently installed Linux Lite 2.6 on my son's computer that ran L.L. 1.6 before. I installed Wine and PlayonLinux using 'Lite Software' utility, and then copied the '.wine' and '.PlayonLinux' folders from the backup to his new home folder. I couldn't find any other configuration folders for Wine in '.config' or '.local/share', so I assumed all his games he used before would be available. But Wine will not run. If I right-click on any '.exe' file, it shows Open with Wine, but the mouse pointer/wheel spins for about 20 seconds and then stops and nothing happens.
In the Whisker menu it shows Wine, Winetricks and PlayonLinux, but nothing will launch.
So I just uninstalled Wine and PlayonLinux using Lite Software, then ran 'sudo apt-get autoremove' which got rid of some other Wine-related stuff.
Can anyone tell me what I should do now to get Wine installed and working? Should I install it again using Synaptic? Should I remove the previous configuration files I copied from the backup?
Wine is confusing the heck out of me, especially since it worked fine before with L.L. 1.6!
(I'm using the 32 bit version of Linux Lite).

I clearly use Wine less than you do, but I do have it installed and running.  I run 2.6 and I installed Wine via Lite Software.  I imagine a different version of Wine is running on 2.6 than when you were on 1.0.6 since each of those Linux Lite versions is based on different LTS versions of Ubuntu.  You might have to see about reinstalling your apps one by one in Wine.  But first we need to get Wine running.

In my experience Wine doesn't completely uninstall using Lite Software.  You could try using Synaptic, search on the word "wine," and remove everything associated with that.  At that point, I would also remove the backed up folders you restored to your 2.6 installation.  Then reboot.  Run Install Updates, and then use Lite Software to reinstall Wine.

Otherwise, if it hasn't been too long since you installed 2.6 to your son's computer, reinstall 2.6, install Wine via Lite Software, and then create a restore point using Systemback before trying to restore backed up folders or reinstalling Wine apps.

I removed the backed-up wine files, rebooted, reinstalled Wine (& PlayonLinux) with Lite Software utility.
Launched 'Configure Wine' from the menu and it works! It downloaded some extra stuff, and when it finished configuring Wine I was able to double-click one of my son's game files and it installed the game!
Thanks for the help.

It was my pleasure.
