Title: Using libimobiledevice to download PDFs from iPhone to laptop
Post by: JanetBiggar on November 02, 2019, 12:40:02 PM
I’m hoping someone can help me here. I send exams in PDF form to my students and I have set one student up with a donated older iPhone 5. I googled and saw that libimobiledevice allows communication so I installed it.

It sees the iPad I connect to it, however when I highlite the iPad there is nothing to view. I installed nautilus and again it shows up in the menu, however it doesn’t show any documents or folders etc, just blank.

I sense there is  something else I need to do...

Can anyone explain what it is I am missing or is there another way in which these PDFs can be obtained other than connecting to wifi and saving them from going to what’s app web and downloading them from there?  The guys don’t often have internet access is why I am looking for another way.

Maybe Bluetooth, but I’m not sure if that will work from an iPhone to Linux.

Either way, it won't be fun. Debian has an excellent Wiki on this - https://wiki.debian.org/iPhone If you're device is supported, and you're prepared to spend some time in the Terminal, you should be good to go.

Thanks for your time Jerry. I had a look at the Debian info and it looks too complex for my level and since there’s a way he can get the PDFs via Whatsapp I think I will simply provide him with money for data when necessary.

@JanetBiggar  I have an iphone 6s and I use FileExplorer (download from app store) and using a router I just set up a home/local network with my pc/laptop and files can be transferred either way using simple copy and paste.

Even if your student doesn't have internet, a wireless router on it's own can be used to setup a simple local network for file transfers.

Hope this helps.

Sorry Jerry I didn’t answer your question, it’s an iPhone 4 (A1332 model) and running 7.1.2

Thank you DeepThought this is good to know as although I keep my expenses low here putting them towards more essential items I do have a donated router. However, in this particular case this grade 10 youth has been scouted by one of the professional soccer teams so will be leaving my area to go to Pretoria where he will continue his studies while he plays soccer.

I will be sending him with one of the laptops running LL as he still has grade 11 and 12 to go and is very strong academically, but given this situation I won’t implement your “fix” in this case.
