Title: Update/Install Wine 5.0 in Linux Lite
Post by: buumchakalaka on February 15, 2020, 06:05:20 PM
Hi friends, I am a complete noob about Linux and this is the first distribution I use.
I have a problem that I have no clue how to solve. I want to play some Windows games with Wine, but when I install Wine through Lite Software it installs the 3.0 version, but the most recent version of wine is 5.0, and as a result is giving me problems (It doesnt run any of the games I tried).
I'm trying to figure out how to update or install the newest version but can't figure it out.

Hope someone can give me a hand, thanks in advance!

Install PlayOnLinux and you should be able to install the newest Wine version or check Steam and Lutris for the games you play.

Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install playonlinuxIt should install Wine by default and the program gives an option in a drop down menu to install other versions of Wine.

That command is to be ran out of terminal or you can use synaptic and search for playonlinux and it should show up allowing you to install it.

When I do that I get the following

What Linux Lite version do you have installed?

Run what the error told you to do also out of terminal.

Playonlinux should have installed without issues in 18.04 base Ubuntu unless something else has been done to the base.

Run in terminal

Code: [Select]

After doing that I get the following

Explain exactly what you have done to this point please as it should never try to get a non 64 bit package and it looks as though it has. You can open up synaptic and see if it has broken packages, if it does uninstall them and if you did anything to the source lists please set them back to default by unchecking them in the software settings.

The only thing I did was try to install winehq from the official page, I have entered synaptics and when I tried to update / repair using synaptics, it showed the following error

E: /var/cache/apt/archives/libfaudio0_20.03-bionic~1ppa1_i386.deb: trying to overwrite `/usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libFAudio.so.0', which is also in the package libfaudio:i386 19.03-bionic~5ppa3

Uninstall the Wine you have installed along with that package. If in doubt ask please. Use synaptic as it is easier for new users, more dangerous but easier.

I could give you a long list of things to do or a safer way and maybe better if this is a newly installed system without a lot of things on it. If that is the case, copy everything you have to a flash drive or other media and just reinstall without adding any additional repos and install playonlinux. Do me a favor, run
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get remove winehit enter and copy and paste what is says in the terminal here so I can see, do not type yes and hit enter again before I see what it says please.

First of all I thank you for your patience to help me, I have thought about reinstalling linux, but I will keep trying what you tell me, by doing
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get remove wine what appears in the terminal is
"E: Could not block /var/lib/dpkg/lock-frontend - open (11: Resource temporarily unavailable)
E: Unable to acquire the dpkg frontend lock (/var/lib/dpkg/lock-frontend), is another process using it?"

If you have synaptic open, close it and rerun the command.

Ok do you want to try to fix or to reinstall from scratch? If you want to try to fix run the:
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get remove --purge wine
After it completes run:
Code: [Select]
sudo apt autoremove --purgeThe test will be if it reboots, make sure any added ppas you did are unchecked. You learn by fixing but sometimes it is easier and faster to reinstall, just make sure you have anything you want to save put on an external device if you go the reinstall route.

do you have snap package of wine installed or an appimg of wine installed?
You can also try installing playonlinux now if you have rebooted.
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install playonlinux

I tried to install Wine but was unable to install it.

When entering
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install playonlinux
Code: [Select]
Reading package list ... Done
Creating dependency tree
Reading status information ... Done
playonlinux is already in its latest version (4.3.4).
0 updated, 0 new will be installed, 0 to remove and 0 not updated.

You should see playonlinux in the menu, click on the icon and wait for it to udpate it's cache, there should be wine version menu located at the top in one of the drop down menus on the program. I have not tried it but you should be able to see newer wine versions that can be installed. I am assuming this as I have never tried it.

YES, you are correct, there are 2 versions (wine (x86) (in which there are 2 installed versions (3.17 and 2.22) and the other is Wine (amd64) where there is no version installed, I understand that I have to install the latest, but what do I install? x86 or amd64?

On a 64bit system always install 64bit, so the amd64 version is what you choose. You should also have been shown version 5rc of wine if I remember right testing out.

OK, will I install amd64, 5.2 or 5.2 staging, do you recommend me?
There are others like for example
5.1 staging
5.1

I cannot recommend any version as I do not use wine. If you can find a stable version that works with what you are going to use wine for then use that instead of release candidates. That is just an opinion and not an endorsement.
