bitsnpcs - this problem went away by itself. To start with it wasn't even recognizing there was a stick in the slot. Then after a few retries with various sticks I got a ghost icon on the desktop & a prompt to enter my password to mount it. I can't remember the exact wording. I didn't want to do this until I knew what was going on hence the anti-virus route. The sticks worked on my other two laptops. The next time I booted up everything worked as normal, so who knows what was up? Thanks for your interest.

Good to read that part is solved

Well it appeared to finish OK but I can't find any virus-scan-report.txt in my home folder. Normal? or is this just more of the same 'things not doing what they should'. I've had an inordinate amount of this lately.

It should mines empty thou...

firenice03, I think we're there, & I'm running a scan now. Getting the warnings you did. I'll update when it's finished.
Good to hear :)

The original Scan took sometime to run too - I find the modified to run much better (less errors and quicker)

Just to add to my troubles i now have two laptops playing up. This toshiba is not opening any of my memory sticks.

Hello pingball57,
is the Toshiba mounting the usb sticks but not opening them, or is it not mounting them and not opening them?
Do the usb sticks open on another computer using Linux Lite ?

@pingball57
for the RM command, it needs sudo..

Code: [Select]
sudo rm -rf /var/log/clamav/freshclam.log
Perhaps another process/update was pending a reboot?? Since then you're "working"

An incorrect password in the CLI should prompt "try again" or incorrect password"

Thanks firenice03 but things are still not going straight here. I ran autoremove in a new CLI (nothing else open as far as i can tell) but it gives:

jpa@jpa-SATELLITE-C850D-11Q:~$ sudo apt autoremove
E: Could not get lock /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (11: Resource temporarily unavailable)
E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), is another process using it?

Doing sudo apt-get install clamav gets same result :

jpa@jpa-SATELLITE-C850D-11Q:~$ sudo apt-get install clamav
[sudo] password for jpa:
E: Could not get lock /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (11: Resource temporarily unavailable)
E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), is another process using it?
jpa@jpa-SATELLITE-C850D-11Q:~$

All this is one reason I'm looking for a virus as a possible cause. My password contains capitols might this have any effect (i don't think it should). I also found a virus scan report in my home/documents folder dated yesterday but there was nothing in it.
I've been having a lot of trouble with anything electrical at the moment esp. if it contains micro processors & I'm finding it all a bit freaky.
Thanks again for taking time with this. If there are delays in my replies it's because i get little chance to do things like this.

update (5 min later):
Talking of freaky, on shutting down just now I got a strange & worrying black screen with widely spaced text & before i could make any sense of it it cut to the closedown splash but with the message 'unattended upgrade in progress' a percentage & sleep in 5s - it then shut down but I'm sure i saw upgrade complete for an instant. I wasn't upgrading anything or running anything so i can only assume somethings been going on in the background. sneaky things like this worry me. It's one reason why i got rid of windows.

update:
thinking this 'upgrade' was the problem I reopened a CLI & ran autoremove which seems have worked & removed quite bit of stuff, so i ran apt-get install clamav, which also seems to have worked, so i ran freshclam which gave the expected error;

jpa@jpa-SATELLITE-C850D-11Q:~$ sudo freshclam
[sudo] password for jpa:
ERROR: /var/log/clamav/freshclam.log is locked by another process
ERROR: Problem with internal logger (UpdateLogFile = /var/log/clamav/freshclam.log).

but the suggestd rm -rf gives this :

jpa@jpa-SATELLITE-C850D-11Q:~$ rm -rf /var/log/clamav/freshclam.log
rm: cannot remove '/var/log/clamav/freshclam.log': Permission denied
jpa@jpa-SATELLITE-C850D-11Q:~$

So whats preventing me?

May try with the modified:
Code: [Select]

You could probably run sudo apt autoremove as suggested in the terminal response or use Lite Tweaks remove the old kernels if you want
Code: [Select]
sudo apt autoremove

Info: https://www.linuxliteos.com/manual/tutorials.html#antivirus Which you have..

Install - Confirm says installed as its looking as if its not
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install clamavUpdate Defs
Code: [Select]
sudo freshclamIf Error
ERROR: /var/log/clamav/freshclam.log is locked by another process
Then (remove the log)
Code: [Select]
sudo rm -rf /var/log/clamav/freshclam.logThen
Code: [Select]
sudo freshclam

Wait for finish then Scan
Code: [Select]
sudo clamscan -r -i / | grep FOUND >> /home/youruser/virus-scan-report.txtOnce scan completes you will open the text file in your home directory...

Lets see how this round goes :)

Thanks firenice.
I tried again with same result then tried your sudo apt-get install --fix-missing which i think has worked:

jpa@jpa-SATELLITE-C850D-11Q:~$ sudo apt-get install --fix-missing

jpa@jpa-SATELLITE-C850D-11Q:~$ sudo freshclam
sudo: freshclam: command not found

but I'm still getting sudo: freshclam: command not found. I used sudo apt-get upate which produced a lot of text ending;

Fetched 5,759 kB in 9s (600 kB/s)
Reading package lists... Done

so i tried to run clam as per tutorial

jpa@jpa-SATELLITE-C850D-11Q:~$ sudo clamscan -r -i / | grep FOUND >> /home/jpa/virus-scan-report.txt
sudo: clamscan: command not found

& got sudo: clamscan: command not found. I did all this without anyother widow open (i had a web browser window open originally to follow the instructions & copy the commands from). I take it I did the above right?

On the plus side - on trying a usb stick this evening everything worked as normal. perhaps I'd upset things with trying to get Clam.

Not sure whats going on but for the apt-get portion.. you need the rest of the command..  apt-get update or try with --fix-missing
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get update --fix-missing OR
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install --fix-missing

You may want also try in Lite Tweaks the Package Manager Repair (don't recall exact name, not on my LL box)

Also - Could not open lock file /var/lib/apt/lists/lock - open (13: Permission denied) You may want to close all open windows especially anything open with elevated/admin access (SystemBack - Synaptic - Folder w/ rights etc.)

Hope this gets you pointed in the right direction

Just to add to my troubles i now have two laptops playing up. This toshiba is not opening any of my memory sticks. I decided to try running a  virus scan as given in the help tutorials here
( https://www.linuxliteos.com/manual/tutorials.html#antivirus ) & have run into more problems. I've had this in the CLI:

Err:5 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu xenial-updates/main amd64 libcurl3 amd64 7.47.0-1ubuntu2.5

jpa@jpa-SATELLITE-C850D-11Q:~$ sudo rm -rf /var/log/clamav/freshclam.log
jpa@jpa-SATELLITE-C850D-11Q:~$ sudo freshclam

jpa@jpa-SATELLITE-C850D-11Q:~$

Clearly the tutorial is out of date with 404 ip address but why am i getting (1: Operation not permitted) & (13: Permission denied) as well as command not found? Anyone willing to help? Thanks.

update:
just before shutting down i tried my flash m/stick again - it was recognized this time but i got an authentication dialogue box wanting my admin password to mount. I cancelled until i know whats going on.
