I've decided to give up the fight with vlc.  I found another DVD player that works.  However, when I run "apt-get remove vlc-nox" or "apt-get autoremove"  I get the following in both instances:
E: Could not open lock file /var/lib/dpkg/lock-frontend - open (13: permission denied)
E: Unable to aquire the dpkg frontend lock (var/lib/dpkg/lock-frontend), are you root?

How do I get rid of vlc?  Thanks for your help with this one.

The in-series upgrades are optional.
In broad terms 5.8 is 'better' than 5.6, which is 'better' than 5.4 etc,
At this stage in the release cycle, anyone coming fresh to 5.x would get 5.8 over an earlier version. But if there is any problem downloading and creating a 5.8 boot media, using a known good 5.0 (or 5.4) is fine.  I think you have mentioned problems with burn software on another thread.
