Attempting to play a commercial video (works in Windows' VLC), video window flashes on screen but does not play.
Tried "sudo apt remove VLC". Got the following:

Also, tried "sudo apt install VLC" after attempted removal and got the following:

eveusb seems to be the "common denominator".
Should I try removing and installing eveusb?

Do you have any System Restore Utility (timeshift) snapshots from before your attempt to remove vlc ?
Are you giving us all the context ?

I have never used the System Restore Utility. I did a full copy and paste of the results of the two terminal commands. I think I want to remove and reinstall VLC. Maybe the problem can be fixed in place. What do you suggest that I do next?

An effective backup policy is highly recommended.

As you've already tried one method to remove and reinstall further attempts to do the same thing are unlikely to make things much better.
To try to fix what you have, we need to understand exactly what the current state is.
Does VLC run at all ?
What do you suggest that I do next?
In your position, I'd be tempted to re-install the OS.

I agree and I have no problem with that. I got my Linux Lite right after version 5 came out. My research shows that the series 6 versions require a processor with at least two cores. My AMD TF-20 only has one core. Does it make sense to install using the same version 5 media and then do a system update? I'd rather do that than buy new hardware. Thanks for your help. I'm happy to have made this problem an easy fix for you.

AMD TF-20 was not a high performance CPU even when new and suggests the system may be quite old.
It may not run Linux Lite version 6 satisfactorily so sticking with version 5 is probably wise for the time being.
The roadmap gives Linux Lite 5.x end of support as April 2025.
I'd rather do that than buy new hardware

Yes, though if your first install was LL 5.0 and you are now 5.8 via in-series upgrades, then using the 5.8 iso would cut out the in-series upgrade.
You'd still need to run updates for all the patches.
I'm happy to have made this problem an easy fix for you.
VLC that comes with LL should not need deleting and re-installing.
Using plug-in media shouldn't give permissions issues.
It is a balance between the time and effort required to look into multiple problems with no guarantee of fixing them versus a clean slate.
From posts seen on other forums, check and use the Lite Software for common applications like Wine rather than installing them ad-hoc.
Please consider using 'Backups' (aka deja-dup) for your home directory and 'System Restore Utility' (aka Timeshift) to give some protection for your system files.
This is for all uses, but even more so if you like to experiment.

I actually have Linux Lite version 5.4. Would you recommend downloading version 5.8 and starting over with that? Of course I'd back up my meager 3 Gb of Home folder first. By 2025 I should be ready to upgrade my laptop - probably to a late model used something. Thanks again for your assistance.

The in-series upgrades are optional.
In broad terms 5.8 is 'better' than 5.6, which is 'better' than 5.4 etc,
At this stage in the release cycle, anyone coming fresh to 5.x would get 5.8 over an earlier version. But if there is any problem downloading and creating a 5.8 boot media, using a known good 5.0 (or 5.4) is fine. I think you have mentioned problems with burn software on another thread.

I've decided to give up the fight with vlc. I found another DVD player that works. However, when I run "apt-get remove vlc-nox" or "apt-get autoremove" I get the following in both instances:
E: Could not open lock file /var/lib/dpkg/lock-frontend - open (13: permission denied)
E: Unable to aquire the dpkg frontend lock (var/lib/dpkg/lock-frontend), are you root?
How do I get rid of vlc? Thanks for your help with this one.

Those commands are not allowed to run at user level. Prefix them with
sudo and enter your password if asked.
