Title: Shotwell problem in 3.0
Post by: Coastie on July 22, 2016, 02:04:53 PM
I think Shotwell was in 2.8 Lite Software. Anyway it worked in 2.8. It is not in 3.0 so I installed it with Synaptic. It could not view the pictures from my camera although Thunar loaded them as png. Neither could Gimp, Ristretto , etc.  ???

Does anyone know what would cause this? Any recommendation for a photo organizer for LL 3.0?

Shotwell cannot display files without proper file endings - try checking on that.

I used to like F-Spot but it has been untended for some years now. XnView would be an up-to-date option.

I think it should have viewed .png files.

Maybe Linux just can't view files on a camera so they have to be copied from the camera to my computer first. I usually use iPhoto on my iMac offering to import them as soon as the camera is connected and turned on. I was trying to cut out using iPhoto.

Why not try and import the photos using Shotwell, and see what happens?

The PNG format is intriguing: I should expect either JPEG or RAW with photos, and nothing but. It could be that Thunar only displays thumbnails (which would explain .png), not the actual images.

There may well be a bug somewhere - perhaps OS failure to recognize the attached hardware. One should be watchful here lest the camera card gets messed up (= pix lost).

I am using Shotwell on LL3.0 and have no problem opening files that are actually on the computer or external drives.
For photos on my phone  I have to download them via Bluetooth (or would if I could get it to work in LL  :-[)
For some reason I have to download them with Xubuntu to a separate partition, but after that Shotwell works fine. I suppose the Bluetooth problem is a separate issue.

Thanks, I will when I get some more pictures on the camera. The ones that were were imported to the iMac and deleted from the camera.
