Thanks for the reply and link--and I hope we don't upset Jerry. . I will read thru your link soon.

My only purpose to set up Openssh-server on a 4.4 Live with Persistence 16gb stick, is to practice sshing into another laptop with the same USB config but using the Openssh client.. I am going to buy an Odroid N2, which runs on Ubuntu bionic with modifications to cleanly interface with Kodi. LiLi 4.4 is also run by Ubuntu-bionic so the server should be compatible. CoreElec.org is still in alpha stage with nightly updates and need users feedback, info about errors and improvements. They need  for the user to ssh "into" the N2 and get error info, ie dmesg, and send them the log. I plan to use the client stick then to do the sshing. I plan to have my N2 in another room connected to my NAS through my 1gb Ethernet network/ router. I want to test my ssh client and server laptops the same way. I'm not concerned about security--and yes I understand ssh is all ab out security. I'm just initially trying to test following the directions from CoreElec by using ssh.

I have text copies of the auth, syslog, known_hosts files, as well as the terminal log in screen. You mentioned you were not concerned with these so I haven't posted them
Thanks again,
Ron

I guess I would like to know what you are specifically trying to accomplish, i/e, what do you want to do with SSH and LL, not the particular way you tried to do it. Then perhaps I can offer a simple solution for you. What do you want to do with Linux Lite and your SSH server? How do you want to use the connection?
Start with this: https://www.dbts-analytics.com/ll4ntw1.html

All opinions expressed and all advice given by Trinidad Cruz on this forum are his responsibility alone and do not necessarily reflect the views or methods of the developers of Linux Lite. He is a citizen of the United States where it is acceptable to occasionally be uninformed and inept as long as you pay your taxes.

@rondi we are not a Server OS. Our Desktop OS is built for people transitioning from Windows to Linux - that's our focus. Sure, you can install what you're looking to do, but keep in mind there may be no response to your question, that's up to the members. I'd rather they spent any free time they have answering questions that pertain specifically to our focus. May I suggest you use a Server OS like Centos or Fedora that will cater more to your needs.

I have installed Openssh-server on LiLi 4.4. It runs but i cannot get it to run ssh user@localhost--basically a loop back test. Sometimes it gets far enough to ask for a password and then fails when I have used a password that I entered befores. Other times it fails with other errors. I have tired a number of times to purge openssh (this also removes the config files) and then reinstalled it. but the same thing happens again. By now I have accumulated numerous usernames/passwords and every time I purge and reinstall--those same usernames appear in the log. I have no idea where the original un/pw are kept that the rsa creates from--but it recreates the rsa's with every install.

I have created a new usb stick with persistence but have not installed Openssh-server yet I want to ask here first.  So a few questions please:
1. Will openssh-server even work from the above--LiLi 4.4 Live with persistence on a USB stick?
2. Where is the original username/password kept that the 2046 bit rsa code is generated from? I need to remove that too when I purge.
3. Can I safely delete the /var/logs syslog and auth logs without any problems? These files get big.
4. Has anyone done this--hopefully someone has and can give me some pointers.

thia,
Ron
