Look in /var/log/dist-upgrade/apt.log file, and it should identify the packages that were broken. You'll have to apt-get remove them, then do Menu, Favorites, Install Updates. If this doesn't work, you're package system is pretty fried. This is what happens when ppa's for 2 different series are mixed together, it's a serious error that can be very difficult to correct. You could be much more productive with a 10 minute reinstall. Live and learn :)

Well, that's disappointing, but I can live with Krita 2.8 for now. But I'm having trouble getting that installed. Can you help me restore the original package/repository situation?

I removed the dimula73/krita repository and refreshed. Now it doesn't show krita-2.9, just the regular krita package. But when I try to install it in Synaptic, it complains: "Could not apply changes. Fix broken packages first." When I click Edit > Fix Broken Packages it reports an error.

Code: [Select]
E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.
E: Error, pkgProblemResolver::Resolve generated breaks, this may be caused by held packages.
E: Unable to correct dependencies

If I use command line and apt-get to install krita, I get this message again:

Code: [Select]
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
krita : Depends: calligra-libs (= 1:2.8.1-1-0ubuntu3) but it is not going to be installed
Depends: kde-runtime but it is not going to be installed
E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.

Any help fixing broken packages and generally getting me out of this mess would be much appreciated -- thank you!

This is getting rather messy, you should stick with what works, ie. the original. In Install/Remove Software you can remove broken packages. Krita is for the KDE desktop so it's not a 'natural' fit for XFCE which is what LL runs on.

I've also found it suggested to use aptitude rather than apt-get to install the package. Aptitude is verbose! It gives what looks like a lot of information, and asks if I want to "accept this solution?" But I don't understand what I would be accepting, so I thought I'd better not -- not without checking here.

Thank you for your help on this! The install step is giving me this error message:

Code: [Select]
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.

krita-2.9 : Depends: kde-runtime but it is not going to be installed
E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.

In Synaptic, I found Edit > Fix Broken Packages and clicked it (didn't seem to do anything), re-updated, and re-tried installing. Same error message.

Googling, I found the suggestion to try this:

Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get autoclean $$ apt-get clear cache
But still get the error about broken packages. Anything else I should try? Thanks again.

The Kubuntu backports won't work, that page states that it's for 14.10, LL is based on 14.04 so you need to use the 'Krita Lime PPA' instead.

Go into Menu, System, Install/Remove Software. Search for everything krita and remove it. Then on the menu, Settings, Repositories, on the Other Software tab delete the backports ppa and follow the onscreen instructions. Close Install/Remove Software. Now add the Krita Lime PPA in the terminal with:

Code: [Select]
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:dimula73/krita
then do:

Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install krita-2.9
Then follow the rest of that tutorials instructions. Getting 'the latest' of something can be risky, it's best practice to stay with what is recommended unless of course you need something specifically from the new version.

Hi -- Up to last week, I was using Krita in LinuxLite 2.2 on my Lenovo ThinkPad.

With the release of LL 2.4, I decided it was time to do a clean install and get rid of my Windows XP dual-boot. So I did, and now LL has my entire hard drive to itself. So far, so good.

Now I want to re-install Krita. In Synaptic Package Manager, 2.8.5 is the latest version listed. I'd like to install Krita 2.9, so I followed the Ubuntu steps on this page (adding the Kubuntu backports repository):
https://krita.org/download/krita-desktop/

When I launched Krita I get a "Critical Error: Essential application components could not be found", and the title screen behind it seems to say version 2.8.5.

I was hoping for Krita 2.9, so I found instructions on this page:
http://ubuntuhandbook.org/index.php/2015/02/upgrade-krita-2-9-ubuntu-14-04/

...where it says I should "install krita-2.9 krita-2.9-dbg". But when I do, it says it can't locate either of those resources.

I'd settle for a working copy of Krita 2.8, so I've also tried uninstalling the Krita packages with Synaptic, and re-installing with Synaptic, and I still get the Critical Error when I try to run it.

I feel stuck. I'd sure appreciate any help! Thanks.
