Title: Installing Webmin on Linux Lite 6.2
Post by: sqwuade on November 21, 2022, 04:56:06 AM
Is anyone running Linux Lite as a server OS?  I'm running Apache, LetsEncrypt, ssh, xRDP and it works great as a webserver.  The only problem I've had is that Webmin doesn't support Linux Lite so, after Webmin is installed (By either .deb file or manually) the OS show as "Generic Linux 6.0" and the Webmin server modules don't load automatically like they do when installing on Ubuntu 22 or Mint 21.  It seems to me that the same install routines that work for Ubuntu and Mint should work for LL since I don't see any real differences in the filesystem structures so if I could trick Webmin into thinking it was installing on Ubuntu instead of LL that might work.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Check if it has been added to the Session and Startup menu. Linux Lite is an Xfce modified desktop so maybe check the Xfce forum. Not sure why you want to use a Linux Lite desktop system as a server instead of an Ubuntu or Debian server installation, when you can spin up any desktop system peripherals you need access to on the server anyway. Check the link below for other options to Webmin.

Thanks for the reply Trinidad.  I decided to run Linux Lite because I liked the GUI and it ran really well on my hardware.  I'd used Linux Mint for hosting for around 8 years and that is primarily a desktop OS as well so figured I'd give LL a try.  I didn't know that Webmin would be tricky to setup on it at that time.

Webmin isn't an app per se, it runs it's own http server (perl based I believe) in which you can interface with the OS.  It does run on LL, it's just that many of the modules don't install automatically like they do on Ubuntu / Mint.  I may try out some of those alternatives in the link you sent to see how they run.

Cheers!

I just got a response from Ilia at Webmin and they will be adding support for Linux Lite to the next release of Webmin (2.010).  He sent me a beta .deb install file and it worked fine so I've got Webmin running with full functionality (As far as I can tell) on my Linux Lite server now.

BTW, Trinidad.  I've been checking out ****pit, which I found from that link you sent and it's a good server management tool as well.

It would be so nice if more users would use your method of contacting developers when Linux Lite has configuration problems with their software. This is how Linux Lite gains more access to software additions. Thanks for that effort.

Been around for while and there are debs for it. If you try it let me know if there are any graphics issues. Designed originally for Fedora I think. Good luck with your Linux Lite server. Sounds like fun. I quit installing servers from DE ISO's after Debian 9 when LXDE got buggy. The forum is sensoring the link, my goodness how silly. Where's Elan?

Sure thing Jerry and Trinidad.  Glad to be able to help out and move things forward!  I just recently did an update to Webmin and confirmed that Linux Lite is recognized by the latest production release of Webmin (v.2.010).

Who maintains the forum software?  I was noticing that there is no option for Linux kernel 6 in the profile settings yet.  You can only choose up to kernel 5 the way it is now.

Cheers!

Have you tried installing Webmin on your Linux Lite server using the .rpm package instead of the .deb package? Linux Lite is based on Ubuntu, which uses .deb packages, but other Linux distributions like CentOS, which uses .rpm packages, are also supported by Webmin. You can download the Webmin .rpm package and try installing it on your Linux Lite server to see if it works.

Hi Fatatris,

I have not tried the .rpm package install method on LL.  On Ubuntu type systems I usually add webmin GPG to trusted repositories and then install from terminal.

### Install Webmin and GPG keys
curl -o setup-repos.sh https://raw.githubusercontent.com/webmin/webmin/master/setup-repos.sh
sh setup-repos.sh

Cheers!
