YEs, it seems there is no way to configure or choose system sounds and, come to think of it, I don't have any.

Actually, this is one area where Windows seems better. Since Windows 3.1 it has always been easy to change such things, also alter the colour and thickness of windows, borders, scroll bars etc. and then save as a theme. In LL2 at least, but also I think the other two distros I have used (Mint and Elementary), also you can't configure these things.

I tried downloading a few themes and following the instructions in the manual, but of the 10 xcfce themes downloaded, only one made it into the Themes folder as one that shows up in the Settings/Appearance. Thxs to a comment by someone here in another thread - who I neglected to thank or bookmark - I found some themes in Synaptic and they loaded.

Maybe there is a tweaking app that allows you to start with a theme and customize it, but if so I haven't found one. I just downloaded xfce4-goodies in Synaptic but can't find them anywhere. I don't really like tweaking things overmuch but I do like that sound alert in Transmission because it alerts me to Start the next one in the queue. And it is frustrating that it is so hard an issue, small as it is, to fix. THere are some tips on one of  your links about how to edit the cranberra-gtk file and when I have quiet time I'll see if I can do it. Otherwise, I'll just have to accept that some simple things are very hard to do and probably just live without them.

I suppose the end result is that sounds, alert-themes, etc. don't work well in LL but I have a feeling this is more of a general XFCE issue than a problem specific to Linux Lite.

THanks, will check out.

Meanwhile, am I right that there is no way to change sound themes in LL2?

Hi CaperAsh,

I don't have an answer but I experimented with searching on the phrase "xfce sound events" and this post looks promising:

https://forum.xfce.org/viewtopic.php?id=8618

You can always give the www.xfce.org forum a try and post your question there.

Can no-one help with this? I have no idea how to alter the .json file to get a sound alert.
I guess the learning opportunity in the title isn't clear (it's mainly for myself to start to learn such things and/or for someone else to learn by teaching!)

Post installation Transmission completion of job sound alarm doesn't work. I think the issue is in these two lines in the settings file (attached as text) in .config:

"torrent-complete-notification-enabled": true,
"torrent-complete-sound-command": "canberra-gtk-play -i complete-download -d 'transmission torrent downloaded'",

Can anyone point me in direction of substituting a sound it can play and how to write it in?
I have some sound themes in the usr/share/sounds folder (though don't know how to change sound themes yet) which presumably could be used.
