Title: get_iplayer File Format
Post by: AL13N on June 10, 2014, 07:18:16 AM
A heads-up for anyone looking to install the get_iplayer application.

Installing get_iplayer via the Synaptic Package Manager (Install/Remove Software) resulted in downloads being saved to .flv format.

Installing via PPA* resulted in downloads being saved to .mp4 and .m4a (AAC) formats for video and audio respectively.

Either Synaptic Package Manager is not automatically installing additional dependencies required for encoding, or the get_iplayer version in Ubuntu repositories is out of date or broken.

If you are both downloading and watching/listening on your computer then this is not a problem - VLC and other media players will play .flv files.

But if you plan on playing the downloads elsewhere (TV, mobile devices) then the .mp4/.m4a formats are much more widely supported.

Hello!

Thanks for the tip.

Yes, that's the bad side about the repositories. You avoid 'cutting edge' issues, but at the same time, you miss enhancements and bug fixes. I guess that's why Launchpad exists...
