I've been poking around on various threads and the thing that I find interesting here is "the answer is always  no" in the particular situation of a config file update. So, if the answer is always no, why would you ask the user what to do? Especially since most of the people you'd like to get on board or not going to be technical?

See here:  http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=46&t=180818#p941559.  Same answer applies to Linux Lite as Mint in this post.

Everything seems to be ok with that.  I get "Linux Lite 2.0 LTS \n \l" and "Ubuntu 14.04 trusty Linux Lite 2.0".  I didn't have to change anything in leafpad.

Any other suggestions?

Strange.  I'm not sure what else might be causing the problem.  Maybe someone else has better idea.

Obviously, something changed.  I don't know what.  I'm sure I hit 'y' thinking that was what was needed for the updates to take effect.

Looks like I have the same problem since the last update.  I suppose I hit "y" instead of "n"....

(Sorry but some of the previous posts have me a little confused as I'm not sure which ones would apply to me.  I wasn't trying to install heimdall.)

Use steps in post #16 by Scott(0).  That should fix it.

Looks like I have the same problem since the last update.  I suppose I hit "y" instead of "n".  :(  Can I fix this (get rid of the Ubuntu screens and go back to the LL screens) without reinstalling LL?  For the most part, I've got LL configured just the way I want it.  (Sorry but some of the previous posts have me a little confused as I'm not sure which ones would apply to me.  I wasn't trying to install heimdall.)

Just for info in this thread. Any time you agree (say yes instead of no) to the package maintainers version of a text file like /etc/issue or whatever. The old one will still still be there. It's name will be /etc/issue.dpkg.old.

Just rename /etc/issue to /etc/issue.backup. Rename /etc/issue.dpkg.old to /etc/issue. Reboot.
This can be done with any file said yes to when upgrading.
I learned this using Debian Sid repos.

Code: [Select]
harry@harry-Latitude-XT2:~$ cd /etc
harry@harry-Latitude-XT2:/etc$ ls
<snip>
debconf.conf            lsb-release           smartd_warning.sh
debian_version          lsb-release.dpkg-old
<snip>
LL 3.6,2.8
Dell XT2 > Touchscreen Laptop
Dell 755 > Desktop
Acer 150 > Desktop
I am who I am. Your approval is not needed.

Great! I can get my "do-over" after all. Will be more careful updating in the future.

Thank you both for the information and, more importantly, your time.

John

@Southernstyle

The information Bitsnpcs lists in reply #21 is perfect.

The only small bit of info I'd add is to only choose "entire drive..." if you're sure nothing else is on the hard drive that needs to be saved, like other partitions for example.

Hello John,

if at any time you want to reinstall Linux Lite, you would not need to install a different OS first to replace LL and then reinstall Linux Lite in place of this.
You can insert the LL cd, restart so the cd runs as a live cd and then when on the desktop select the icon to install Linux Lite.
When it asks if you wish to use the entire hard drive and wipe all its contents if you select yes, after the install you will have a clean install of Linux Lite to work with.

Before doing this save any personal files to a usb flash drive or disc, for future use.

Scott,

Thanks for the reply. When doing the initial updates I was asked to "Y/n" updates and the default was "n". It sounded, as if, I would be better served by answering "yes" to that question and ever since, every session on Lite, begins and ends with Ubuntu.

If I load a different OS into the computer can I then replace LL and then reinstall LL in place of the other OS, i.e., getting my "do-over" that way?

Try to bear with me as I'm trying my best to get away from Windows.

Thanks,

John

Hi Southernstyle,

Quote
Is there a way to verify install or get a "do-over" when updating?

I don't have an answer for this. I'm not sure what files have been added/changed/overwritten in this situation, maybe if we wait a day or so someone will have an answer or more information.
