jwwin,

You posted while I was writing last post, so I didn't see that you resolved issue.  Sounds like you may have answered "Yes" to replace the config files.  If you did, we'll need to fix that or you may run into some other problems down the road.  It's not too difficult and we can do that tomorrow.  Just post back to confirm whether you kept the old config or replaced it with the package maintainers version.

I have absolutely no experience with heimdall, so can't help with that.  (Never even heard of it until your post.)  I would imagine there should be a website for that with instructions on its use.  You'll probably have to do some Internet searches for info on how to use it.

Hi Jwwin

Let's see if we can fix this issue:

In post #11 you asked about /etc/issue. The correct answer is selected by default [default=N] so hitting enter at the prompt is all that's needed.

There are two files that may have been changed:
/etc/issue
/etc/lsb-release

Fixing these files is easy. We'll list them in the terminal (they're short) compare them to a correct listing and then make any necessary changes.

Open a terminal. Type:
Code: [Select]
cat /etc/issue
The correct output should be:
Code: [Select]
Linux Lite 2.0 LTS \n \l
If you need to make changes to /etc/issue. Type
Code: [Select]
gksudo leafpad/etc/issuemake the necessary changes and then save the file

Open a terminal. Type:
Code: [Select]
cat /etc/lsb-release
The correct output should be:
Code: [Select]
DISTRIB_ID=Ubuntu
DISTRIB_RELEASE=14.04
DISTRIB_CODENAME=trusty
DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION="Linux Lite 2.0"

If you need to make changes to /etc/lsb-release. Type
Code: [Select]
gksudo leafpad /etc/lsb-releasemake the necessary changes and then save the file

Test and see if the files are fixed. Type
Code: [Select]
cat /etc/issueoutput should be:
Code: [Select]
Linux Lite 2.0 LTS \n \l
Type:
Code: [Select]
cat /etc/lsb-releaseoutput should be:
Code: [Select]
DISTRIB_ID=Ubuntu
DISTRIB_RELEASE=14.04
DISTRIB_CODENAME=trusty
DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION="Linux Lite 2.0"

Did it work? Post back when you have a chance.  ~Scott

     well I apparently "stepped in it again" Cause I entered Yes at the command prompt in regards to updating my system, Couldn't wait for your  reply - guess I've been having such a frustrating time with Linux my patience is about  fried. Oh and tried running the command you gave me - Gold- Finger (basically copied and pasted it) at the command line in the terminal. The only thing it did was ask me for my pass word - which I entered and it took me back to the command prompt - ran no code that I could tell. So I went to the menu search bar and re-entered Heimdall"  - Same results -  no change. Sorry  :-\

Scott,

I, too, have the same problem with the boot screen being Ubuntu, as well as the shut down screen being Ubuntu. Put the commands in as you specified in your post but there are no changes to make, i.e., it reads what it should.

Is there a way to verify install or get a "do-over" when updating?

I don't have an answer for this. I'm not sure what files have been added/changed/overwritten in this situation, maybe if we wait a day or so someone will have an answer or more information.

Scott,

Thanks for the reply. When doing the initial updates I was asked to "Y/n" updates and the default was "n". It sounded, as if, I would be better served by answering "yes" to that question and ever since, every session on Lite, begins and ends with Ubuntu.

If I load a different OS into the computer can I then replace LL and then reinstall LL in place of the other OS, i.e., getting my "do-over" that way?

Try to bear with me as I'm trying my best to get away from Windows.

Thanks,

John

Hello John,

if at any time you want to reinstall Linux Lite, you would not need to install a different OS first to replace LL and then reinstall Linux Lite in place of this.
You can insert the LL cd, restart so the cd runs as a live cd and then when on the desktop select the icon to install Linux Lite.
When it asks if you wish to use the entire hard drive and wipe all its contents if you select yes, after the install you will have a clean install of Linux Lite to work with.

Before doing this save any personal files to a usb flash drive or disc, for future use.

@Southernstyle

The information Bitsnpcs lists in reply #21 is perfect.

The only small bit of info I'd add is to only choose "entire drive..." if you're sure nothing else is on the hard drive that needs to be saved, like other partitions for example.

Great! I can get my "do-over" after all. Will be more careful updating in the future.

Thank you both for the information and, more importantly, your time.

Just for info in this thread. Any time you agree (say yes instead of no) to the package maintainers version of a text file like /etc/issue or whatever. The old one will still still be there. It's name will be /etc/issue.dpkg.old.

Just rename /etc/issue to /etc/issue.backup. Rename /etc/issue.dpkg.old to /etc/issue. Reboot.
This can be done with any file said yes to when upgrading.
I learned this using Debian Sid repos.

Code: [Select]
harry@harry-Latitude-XT2:~$ cd /etc
harry@harry-Latitude-XT2:/etc$ ls
<snip>
debconf.conf            lsb-release           smartd_warning.sh
debian_version          lsb-release.dpkg-old
<snip>
LL 3.6,2.8

Looks like I have the same problem since the last update.  I suppose I hit "y" instead of "n".  :(  Can I fix this (get rid of the Ubuntu screens and go back to the LL screens) without reinstalling LL?  For the most part, I've got LL configured just the way I want it.  (Sorry but some of the previous posts have me a little confused as I'm not sure which ones would apply to me.  I wasn't trying to install heimdall.)

Use steps in post #16 by Scott(0).  That should fix it.

Everything seems to be ok with that.  I get "Linux Lite 2.0 LTS \n \l" and "Ubuntu 14.04 trusty Linux Lite 2.0".  I didn't have to change anything in leafpad.

Any other suggestions?
