Glad you got it sorted out

Mike
64bit OS (32-bit on Samsung netbook) installed in Legacy mode on MBR-formatted SSDs (except pi which uses a micro SDHC card):
2017 - Raspberry pi 3B (4cores) ~ [email protected] - LibreElec, used for upgrading our Samsung TV (excellent for the task)
2012 - Lenovo G580 2689 (2cores; 4threads] ~ [email protected] - LL3.8/Win8.1 dual-boot (LL working smoothly)
2011 - Samsung NP-N145 Plus (1core; 2threads) ~ Intel Atom [email protected] - LL 3.8 32-bit (64-bit too 'laggy')
2008 - Asus X71Q (2cores) ~ Intel [email protected] - LL4.6/Win8.1 dual-boot, LL works fine with kernel 4.15
2007 - Dell Latitude D630 (2cores) ~ Intel [email protected] - LL4.6, works well with kernel 4.4; 4.15 doesn't work

You don't need PPA. The package is available in LL 3.6. Open synaptic (install software) in LL and type "stellarium" in the search box. Make sure you're connected to the internet first.

@pingball57
Go with what TC first suggested in post #3 - it's the simplest & best option - as he said no need to bother with PPA...

You'll find Stellarium in the Ubuntu repository as follows:

1. Go to Menu --> System --> Install/Remove Software

2. Synaptic Package Manager (SPM) will then ask you for your password - enter it

3. In the SPM toolbar, click on Search and enter "stellarium" in the search box

4. You will then see the packages "stellarium" and "stellarium-data" listed - right-click on "stellarium"  and select mark for installation - both packages will be selected by default

5. Click Apply in the SPM toolbar to install both packages, and then you should be good to go...

Hope this helps

Also you can use Deb packages sometimes. Type "Debian --Package Search" in you browser "= whatever you are looking for." No quoptes.

There are various stellarium version .deb tar files for download,https://sourceforge.net/projects/stellarium/files/Stellarium-sources/  just download, extract and right click the file and select the gdebi installer. Thats how I installed Stellarium on LL3.6 but beware if you have older hardware which may not match the required graphics requirements.
On my old computers (they're all old!) only Stellarium 0.11 will run.

Sorry, wrong URL for .deb files, will search later if you are not able to find them.

1) Lenovo T520 i5 LL3.8 8GB ram, fast & stable
2) Medion P4 32bit LL3.8 1GB ram, quite fast & stable
3) eeePC 901 32bit LL3.8 1GB ram, fast & stable
4) eeePC 701 32bit LL3.8 1GB ram, slower & stable but small and light enough to travel with me to New Zealand when visiting family in Blenheim.

Looking form the website it directs Ubuntu derivatives to https://launchpad.net/~stellarium/+archive/ubuntu/stellarium-releases

Which says to add the PPA.. This can be done via command
Code: [Select]
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:stellarium/stellarium-releases
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get update
Do know what PPA's are and their uses and potentials...
