Title: Enable system sounds and events
Post by: tommykry on May 27, 2014, 05:14:05 PM
Hello, Just installed 2.0 beta(and 1.0.8) and think its fantastic! Almost have everything working. ( this is on a Dell Inspiron 1525 Laptop.

Im trying to find a windows replacement for my sisters laptop, so far i have tried Zorin os and Linux Lite 1.0.8
So far i have everything working except: System sounds (ex - Start up and shut down sounds, minimize and maximize windows, log on, log off, error ect... )
i have enabled: Event sounds under appearance Settings, tried to install some Canberra Stuff? Still no system or event sounds?
So far i am loving this OS and think i can get some people to switch to it, just need to get it working as close to windows as possible, so if anyone could point me in the direction i would appreciate it.

I have done numerous google searches spent a few hours trying things and still no system sounds working
(all the other sounds work, youtube, music, video, etc...
Keep up the great work this Os is going to be awesome!
Thanks,
Tommy

Anybody :-\
Does any one use system sounds on Linux lite? or is this just something that it doesn't support, or is there a way to enable them?
Thanks
Tommy

Not supported in XFCE, which is what Linux Lite uses.

From other forums you can get system sounds to work in XFCE but it's not for the beginner.

I have to admit that at least a startup/shutdown sound would be great but this is, so far the only drawback to using LL.

Yes agreed! i researched it as well seems to be a lot of work to get just a start up or shut down sound, i wish it just worked, trying to get some friends and family members to switch over from windows and some small details that people are use to are not common on some Linux versions :(
Anyway still a great lightweight OS.

Hi no never heard this on startup on any LL builds.

I was referring to in general, not 'LL builds'. Cheers.

I have spent the last day investigating this and installing sounds to my computer. System wide sounds in Linux Lite (or any XFCE based distro) is incredibly difficult to set up and get working, the only way this could be implemented is if the XFCE devs made this as simple as click and install, but it is far from that at the moment, but who knows in the future. The best we can hope for at the moment is a start up sound in the final but we are perilously close to going over cd size so we'll have to wait and see, might be one of those surprises we sneak in at the end ;)

Valtam, thank you for taking the time to research this, i did as well and came to the same conclusion, i'm just learning about all this as i just started trying Linux distros in the last few weeks to try and convert some family members and friends to Linux  cause i am tired of them coming to me for help when they get viruses on theirs windows pc,
In my discovery ( i messed w linux maybe 2 years ago) These new distros, especially yours they are really impressive and work great ( i myself will be using this distro now after trying it) The main thing i need from windows still is Photoshop (gimp is close but not quite)
Anyway the whole system sound thing is not so much a big deal to me, but i do like system sounds, but to people i'm trying to convert to Linux Lite, i need to make it as windows like as i can so it will be seamless when they switch.
Thanks for taking the time to investigate, i appreciate it, even w out system sounds Linux Lite is awesome, thanks for the hard work.

It would be nice to have a few system sounds. I worked on this for a while when Deb 8 first came out but with only very limited good results. Would probably have to include some form of dconf editor in the default install then?

I have a package all set to go if anyone wants to test. Just need to logout/in to activate it.
At this stage it's not configurable, so all system sounds are enabled.

Yup, both archs. https://www.linuxliteos.com/files/litesounds_2.0-0010-linuxlite.deb

Install with gdebi only.

So far so good with 32. Have clicks selecting menu items. What is included? Didn't look at the package. Do 64 in a little while.

It's a fork of this package - https://www.xfce-look.org/p/1187979/ adapted for LL.

The spec - http://0pointer.de/public/sound-naming-spec.html

Okay ran through them all in 32bit. Everything that is there works. Typical of default sound themes the volume of the voice of battery level warning is too high compared to the clicks. Chuckled at the logout sound. Kinda scary. The one from 2.8 was nice enough. If we have a default sound theme will changes we make survive updates? Always bugged me 2.8 when the login logout sounds got over written.

Shouldn't be overwritten. The package you have is just a POC. I wanted to see how easy/hard it was to achieve.
A final package would:

- Allow the user to select what sounds they want enabled/disabled
- Enable or Disable the Sound theme
- Have more accurate sounds eg. for Trash being emptied, battery, device etc
- Normalized sound levels

Hi,

The most useful system sound I use all the time on Windows systems is the "ding" sound when turning the volume up or down from the speaker in the task bar. Can this package do that, it's the quickest way to check if sound/soundcard is functionnal IMHO.

Cheers!

64bit good to go Jerry.
Those of you wishing to test this, the sound files are located at: /usr/share/sounds/Lite/stereo  You can use VLC to listen to each one.

I like it! I did replace the trash explosion with the trash empty from /usr/share/sounds/freedesktop/stereo/.  ;D

How do I remove this package? I can't find it in Synaptic. I use the Ubuntu login sound when my desktop comes up because I auto login. The only sound that seems to working is the annoying tinkle when http://www.linuxliteos.com/forums/other/'javascript-error-in-the-main-process'/ (http://www.linuxliteos.com/forums/other/'javascript-error-in-the-main-process'/). Unfortunately, it happens regularly.  :(
