Title: Dropbox not working on new install
Post by: mandoran on June 13, 2015, 04:31:20 PM
I finally decided that the solution to my growing list of problems was to upgrade, and have done a new and clean install of LL 2.4 on my laptop.

My first problem is that Dropbox is not working, for reasons I haven't experienced before. Nothing seems to be happening and I keep getting an 'authentication is needed to run /usr/bin/dropbox' as the super user message, a step I have never seen before and also appeared the first time I ran Skype on the new install. I hope this is something that won't have to be done every run-time, but for Dropbox, nothing satisfies it - my authentication just causes the error message to reappear some seconds later.

Is something misconfigured or wrong with the new install?

Did you check the md5 sum against the download, if not that may be the problem the download may be corrupted. One way to insure download integrity is to use a download manager that supports md5 checking, the one I use is an add-on for Firefox called "Down them all". Before I start the download I make sure to put the md5 checksum in so it can be checked when the download completes. That way I don't have to do any extra steps.

But Dropbox is something that is supposed to be handled automatically via the Lite software installer?

The download I am referring to is the Linux Lite 2.4 iso download the checksum can be found on the download page.

Ah, sorry. No, that could well be the problem. Would be depressing if I have to start again from scratch, but I suppose now is the best time. There is an md5sum.txt file on the burned dvd, I will see if I can puzzle this out.

Thanks for the tip, have checked and the download is good, md5sum checks out.

Good to hear that the md5 checked out, I have no experience with dropbox but I am sure someone who has will reply shortly.

Well, I've just gone ahead and installed it manually, if I have anything to watch out for as a result, I hope someone will let me know.

Otherwise the installation has been a dream, massive improvements in speed and ease all round from 1.6. A real joy to upgrade, major OS events were never pleasant before Linux Lite!

LL has taken the initiative here and are providing Dropbox via our own repo. Do Install Updates, then Lite Software to get it.

That is what I did the first time, which resulted in the inability to connect and superuser authentication message coming up all the time instead. I recalled from earlier installs that Dropbox was a part of the LL software package, so didn't want to install manually if I could avoid it, but I could not get it to work otherwise.

Has there been an update that means I should try the LL repo and process again?

Yes, my instructions are in my last post. Make sure you remove the old dropbox first. Read the entire thread here - https://www.linuxliteos.com/forums/other/dropbox-mouse-and-chrome-settings-not-saved-and-a-word-on-the-log-out-options/ too.

Thanks! Uninstall and reinstall using Lite Software worked perfectly this time.
