Dropbox not working in LL2.2

When I install Dropbox on my 64bit laptop, the icon appears in the notification area as it should. For a short time it has a 'connecting' tooltip appear, then it is completely unresponsive thereafter. No tooltip. Nothing upon left or right click. Nothing upon launching from the menu. Just nuttin'.

Any ideas?
Lorne.

Hi Newvista,

Did you install Dropbox via

menu > all > install-additional-software?

I'm using my Dropbox account successfully on LL2/64 & LL2.2/64 both installed via the method above.

Yes, I installed it using the Install Additional Software tool. Twice.

Here's what I did at the command line:

Code: [Select]
lorne@bl212:~$ dropbox start
Dropbox is already running!
lorne@bl212:~$ dropbox status
Connecting...
lorne@bl212:~$ dropbox stop
Dropbox daemon stopped.
lorne@bl212:~$ dropbox start
Starting Dropbox...
(dropbox:3712): Gtk-WARNING **: Unable to locate theme engine in module_path: "clearlooks",
Dropbox isn't running!
Done!
lorne@bl212:~$
(dropbox:3712): Gtk-WARNING **: Theme file for ColoredPlastic has no name

And then I wrote... after changing my theme back to MediterraneanWhite and icons to Faenza.

Code: [Select]
lorne@bl212:~$ dropbox stop
Dropbox daemon stopped.
lorne@bl212:~$ dropbox start
Starting Dropbox...Dropbox isn't running!
Done!

Now the icon is visible in the panel, but in a greyed out state.

Code: [Select]
lorne@bl212:~$ dropbox status
Connecting...

Lorne.

I'd go to dropbox's site and login 1st on line. The connection hangup might be because you are not logged in.

I have been logged in at Dropbox for the last couple of days. Last night I set up an app there and I've been messing around in my account more than ever. Logged in, I am!

Just for shits and giggles, I installed dropbox on my AspireOne 32 bit netbook today, running LL2.2. It worked perfectly the first time. Required me to log in, as part of the install procedure.

I uninstalled from the menu, Remove Additional Software, thus:

Code: [Select]
lorne@bl212:~$ dropbox status
The program 'dropbox' is currently not installed. You can install it by typing:
sudo apt-get install nautilus-dropbox

To arrive back at the same place:

Code: [Select]
lorne@bl212:~$ dropbox status
Connecting...

Where I'm sitting right now, I have a wired and a wireless connection. At home, where I have a reliable ADSL connection, or here, dropbox doesn't work.

Any other ideas? ( and thanks for the help too! )
Lorne.

If you go to dropbox.com and unlink/delete the problem account and then click on the dropbox icon (menu > all > dropbox), does the initial dropbox sign-in wizard start?

altman, if you are talking about 'clean your cache' with Lite Cleaner, it shows I can remove 0KB from my package cache. Is there some other cache to clean?

Scott(0), I wasn't aware that I had a problem account. Dropbox works fine. It's linked to my netbook computer now. Did you mean logout and back in again? Not clear about what you are looking for here.

Lorne.

Hi Lorne,

I probably should have used the words "problem device" instead. Here's a picture from the dropbox website, it lists all the devices successfully linked to my Dropbox account.

Clicking the "x" next to any device will delete the link between dropbox and the device.

In my experience the greyed out state means no network/internet connection or there's a problem with the login (link) between the device and dropbox. I think it's safe to assume network connectivity is not the problem.

So, if you delete the device link from dropbox.com that corresponds to the computer with the greyed out icon, I wonder if this will cause the device to re-prompt for login credentials, which would hopefully result in a (new) working device link to be created, which would hopefully fix the greyed out icon.

Hey Scott,

Thanks, that's clearer now. At some point yesterday I logged in to dropbox and cleared out a bunch of old linked computers, including this one, that had windoze on it previously. This morning when I turned on this computer, laptop 64 bit LL2.2, the dropbox icon was responding normally, more or less...

After uninstalling and reinstalling dropbox again, when I'm logged out of my dropbox account, dropbox panel indicator is locked in a perpetual state of connecting... I can access the right click menu but nothing there is live. 'Cause I'm logged out?

Stop the daemon, log in to dropbox account, start dropbox, the panel indicator is in the same state as above - it's alive but not effective, in my dropbox account Settings/Security/ I see this browser logged in but no link to this computer.

Are there config files on this machine that persist through an uninstall/reinstall?

Getting closer,
Lorne.

OK, it's working now. What I did:

- uninstall dropbox
- renamed two hidden folders in /home/username/ .dropbox and .dropbox-dist to x.dropbox and x.dropbox-dist
- reinstall dropbox
- log out of dropbox account
- start dropbox
- the program prompted for my credentials and set up a link to my dropbox account.

It must have been an old link to this computer when it had Win7 on it (last week) with the same computer name that caused the mix up in the first place.

Thanks to Scott and altman et al for your patience and guidance,
Lorne.
