Trinidad I did try again with the left arrow key and no joy, so will simply use the external mouse.  Despite the trackpad not working it's a great little laptop for my purposes!

Thanks Jerry for clarifying the ABANDON usage. I will change it.

I'm presuming when you said the Left cursor key that meant the left button on the touch pad - no go, still no life in the touchpad so I will mark as abandoned.

Thanks again all.

Thanks Moltke for your time and ideas.

Let me give that a try Trinidad.

If it doesn't work I will simply bail as it's not a big deal to use a mouse  :)

One other thing to try. Boot the machine without the USB mouse attached and when the login screen appears hit the left cursor key and see if the mouse arrow of the touchpad appears and begins to function.

Tried again with cutting and pasting using the USB mouse then disconnected it before pressing enter. So nothing listed re: touch pad.

Might this mean that perhaps the touch pad is simply dead?

Hard to say but it might as well be the case. Sorry but I'm out of ideas here, looks like it might require some "on-site" assistance, meaning someone has to take a look in the laptop and see whether or not the touchpad is in fact dead or something else is keeping it from woking i.e some missing driver.
Without each others help there ain't no hope for us :)

Here's the output I got, however I have my USB mouse plugged in. I will try to see if I can repeat this without having the mouse plugged in:  Like when I went into the menu there is no device name in the various items listed for the touchpad, only the mouse:

I: Bus=0003 Vendor=045e Product=00d2 Version=0111
N: Name="Microsoft Microsoft Notebook Optical Mouse with Tilt Wheel"
P: Phys=usb-0000:00:1a.0-1/input0
S: Sysfs=/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1a.0/usb3/3-1/3-1:1.0/0003:045E:00D2.0001/input/input6
U: Uniq=
H: Handlers=mouse0 event4
B: PROP=0
B: EV=17
B: KEY=170000 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0
B: REL=1c3
B: MSC=10

I will also check your link.

Hi @JanetBiggar  Open a terminal and type this
Code: [Select]
cat /proc/bus/input/devices and report back the output, amongst the devices listed you should see something like
Code: [Select]
I: Bus=0011 Vendor=0002 Product=0007 Version=01b1
N: Name="SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad"
P: Phys=isa0060/serio2/input0
S: Sysfs=/devices/platform/i8042/serio2/input/input8
U: Uniq=
H: Handlers=mouse2 event8t
B: EV=b
B: KEY=420 0 70000 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0
B: ABS=11000003

Here is a link to the drivers - However my mistake, it is softpedia (not softonic):

https://drivers.softpedia.com/get/KEYBOARD-and-MOUSE/Synaptics/Lenovo-ThinkPad-T400-Synaptics-UltraNav-Driver-162197.shtml

AND I missed seeing that the list only includes Windows OSs and not any Linux...I am assuming it means I'm out of luck.  No big deal as I have a small USB mouse I can send with this laptop.

I just had a Lenovo T400 thinkpad donated (era 2008) RAM 2 GB, 2 core, 2,26 GHz, 32 bit.  It came with no OS so couldn't tell if it worked before or not. USB mouse works fine.

When I go into mouse and touch pad, when the USB mouse is connected it shows the mouse in the dropdown "device" window, however when I disconnect the mouse there are no choices showing in the device menu.

I saw when googling that the Fcn+F8 button toggles the touch pad on and off, however doing this does not change anything.

When I click help when I have the mouse and touchpad window up it says only laptops with a synaptic touch pad will work or show up (something like this, but not the exact wording).

It is possible that the previous owner spilled something on it or something has caused it not to work, however in case this is not the problem might anyone have any suggestions of what to try?  I wasn't sure if I should maybe try downloading a synaptic driver for this lenovo T400, there seems to be two choices from softtonic when I google..?
