Title: Best version of WINE?
Post by: paul1149 on April 01, 2016, 07:58:36 PM
Hi,

I'm running LL 2.8 x64. I currently have WINE 1.7, 1.7-amd64 and 1.7-i386:i386 installed, in addition to winetricks, wine-gecko2.40, wine-geccko2.34-i386 and wine-mono4.5.4.

I'm not sure if all those are necessary. I think most of the secondary ones were requested by programs.

I see WINE 1.8 is available in the repository. And V. 1.97 has just come out, though it's not in the repository yet.

I'm wondering if it's a good idea to upgrade, whether I should leave well enough alone, or wait for LL 3.0 before making the decision. Any input would be appreciated.

Hi paul1149,

Just some general thoughts.

Priorities of updates should go something along:

1. security updates
2. bug fixes
3. improvements/ new features
4. just to have the newest version

So the questions are:
1. Are you aware of any security patch that needs to be applied?
2. Are you having any form of issues with your current setup?

If you can answer both questions with 'no', I'd follow the well known saying: "Never change a running system".

Hope that helps :)

Thanks, LL-user. No big problems here. An occasional glitch, but nothing serious, and nothing that couldn't wait for LL 3.0. Just wondering which version others here were using and how it was working for them.

Paul
