Hello!

Happy to be able to help you out.

If it makes you feel better, you can send the link to me in a private message. It would be interesting to find out about what he has to say about wifi...

Hello!

The early August LinSSID release .deb on sourceforge seems to has fixed what was breaking it on the new 14.04 kernel. It's fine now.

I sure did miss it during its short absence...

Hello N4RPS,
I have been looking around about wifi, I asked a question about scans, and antenna on another forum in the antenna section, the person who answered was the author and maintainer of LinSSID,  his reply was really helpful for me and I was able to improve my scan results (double them) by using the methods he explained how to do.
I am unsure of the etiquette on Linux OS forums so won't post the link to that forum here without permission or the link to this forum there, as I am unsure if it will cause me problems doing so on either forum, and I find both forums very useful for learning.
I just wanted to let you know about this experience as you recommended LinSSID to me.

Hello N4RPS,
thank you.
I installed this last night and had a look at it , it works well.
It found 5 of the same wifi, and the wifi printer, that were online at the time.

I need to learn more about wifi so will research it.

Hello N4RPS,

thank you for the help.
How did it go when you tried LinSSID ?

Using the taskbar icon, it located 7 wifi, and additionally it also found 1 HP printer, none of these were free public access (or printing facilities).

Hello!

LinSSID displays WiFi routers, what channel they're on, and their signal strength. The 14.04 kernel broke it, but since LinSSID was updated on Sourceforge about two weeks ago, it might work again now.

http://sourceforge.net/projects/linssid/

I'll try it myself later tonight, because I really like it...

Hello Sheng-Chieh,
Thank you for your help  ;)
I have hard wired ethernet at home and haven't used wifi this way before, I have used wifi when at my mothers home to do updates on her laptop for her.
I don't have a laptop at the moment, in the future I will try it on a laptop though.

If you click the internet icon on your panel, you should see all the internet possible.  The bar gives you the signal strength.  It should also tell you which one you are connected to.
You probably can guess which one is near you.   Usually free wifi have no password.  So if you connect w/o password, you are definitely on a free one.

If you are using LL w/ a laptop, you probably could move the laptop around and study the signal strength.

Hello,
I have this device AWUS036H for connecting to external wifi, it has its own antenna, I also I have a Yagi 25dBi external antenna, and also an internal 20dBi antenna.
They sent with it a printed photo tutorial, this was for accessing none public wifi by various means using a different Linux Distro.
This is not what I want to do, or how I want to use the equipment.
We have some free public access wifi hotspots at various locations, for everyone and also visitors to use. Not truly free as we pay for those services and don't have a choice in the matter as it is a tax.

I wanted to know which software to add to Linux Lite, that will -
1/ display the wifi it can find.
2/ show me which of those wifi are free public access , home or business, so I do not connect where I should not be connecting.
3/ inform me of the distance from my home the wifi connection is, as I want to do various comparisons between the 3 antenna under different conditions such as weather parameters, time of day, location and direction of the antenna.
4/ allow me to connect to the free public wifi.
