Thank you for your reply. The rubric stated that I should add to an existing thread OR start a new one. Sorry if I should have done the latter. I appeciate your help and will try again.

  • CPU: Intel Core i5-4460

  • MEMORY: 16Gb

  • Kernel: 5.x
Best to open a new thread rather but the 'could not get lock' error usually means an update check is already running and another one has been initiated.

It is possible that a manual check has been started while a periodic automatic background check was already running. If that is the case, simply wait a while before re-running the manual check or observe the update indicator in the bottom right.

Similarly it is not possible to do a manual update if the Synaptic package manager is open for any reason.  If that is the case, close Synaptic before initiating a manual check.

Are you trying to update straight after booting the PC from a LL live image disk or USB drive ?

Updates can only be done after actually installing the software onto the PC and booting from the installed version.
