Title: unsuccessful installation
Post by: Nicholai Doronto on May 29, 2015, 03:28:35 PM
Hello to everyone !

Sad thing I could not install this version on my netbook Samsung NC110 and it's my first Linux try out. I've made a bootable usb stick as it was described in Install Guide. Since I want to leave one partition untouched where I store files, documents music, etc, I went for the something else option in the installation menu. In gparted I've deleted partition where windows was installed, using a free space, I've created swap partition at the end and made an ext4 root that was chosen for LinLite installation. After intstallation to no avail it only boots iso from usb stick. What's causing this problem..? Maybe someone could explain what I do wrong..?

Thanks in advance,

Hello!

Welcome to Linux Lite, and to the forums.

When you installed Linux Lite, on the page where you specified which drives to use, did you specify for GRUB to be installed in the master boot record of the hard drive (usually /dev/sda)? Don't quote me on this, but I think THAT may be the default setting.

If you changed the boot sequence in the BIOS to default to the USB, you might take a look at that, also.

It was installed to dev/sda1 ext4 I specified this partition cause I thought if you'll take master one then it will format whole drive. Boot sequence doesn't make sense I've changed it several times when you boot from drive it's a black screen, it only loads from usb stick. But I still want to get this distro working, have checked other distros didn't like them pretty well. (((

Hello!

The only way the partition you wanted to keep would be affected is to change or delete it in the partition editor (GPartEd). Just remember to select 'Something else' again.

Installing GRUB in the MBR only changes the MBR to accommodate Linux Lite and/or a multi-boot environment. Select THAT (sda), and your boot issue should go away.

I hope this will get you 'on the air' with LL...

Thanks for suggestions, I will keep it in mind when next time installing Linux Lite. Yesterday I've managed to do it in odd way. Disappointed with all that boot stuff I've decided to give it a shot with Ubuntu, after installation it was the same as with Linux Lite boot. But then again I wrote another usb stick with LLite and there was a new option overwrite LLite over Ubuntu I've done that. Now everything runs fine, got my partition untouched and can use files from there. Enjoying Llite at full !
