Title: Trouble installing Linux Lite on Dell Dimension 9200
Post by: Cobey Williamson on May 05, 2019, 01:08:15 PM
Hello all

I am trying to revive an old Dell Dimension 9200 desktop running Windows XP and install Linux Lite.

Specs:
Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4
2 gb RAM
256 ATI Radeon X1300 graphics card
2 320gb SATA drives
BIOS revision 2.5.3

After startup, F12 gets me to the USB boot option, after which I can get to Linux Lite Welcome screen. This is where things go awry.

Start Linux Lite:
blank screen with cursor flashing in upper left corner

Start Linux Lite in safe mode:
runs to "[1.668506] e1000e 0000:00:19.0 Interrupt Throttling Rate (ints/sec) set to dynamic conservative mode"
ends at flashing cursor

Install Linux Lite now:
nothing; screen reverts to "No VGA cable"

Any suggestions?

Hi, As you mentioned the screen goes blank after installation. that happened to me when I purchased a new laptop. many computers don't have virtualization enabled. you need to your "BIOS" system. Usually in dell,

1. SHut down or restart your computer.
2. while it's starting again... keep hit ESC button.
3. you will now enter into BIOS system.
4. you will directly see the virtualization option.
5. hit enable checkbox.
6. click save button.
7. it will give you the option to restart.
8. try a restart and when the computer is switched on try checking your virtual machine.

I am pretty sure it will work.

Hi Seeta - thanks for the suggestion.

Turned virtualization on, without effect. No change to system behavior. Same results as before.

Linux Lite 4.x is 64-bit only.  Perhaps your Dell Dimension is a 32-bit machine?  Try the 32-bit version of Linux Lite 3.8!

If the BIOS has a "virtualization" option the MOBO & CPU can run 64bit, however on most of these older hardwares you will need to install more RAM before that option will work even if you select it in the BIOS. Usually the 64bit machines came with 3gig of RAM or more. None of that really mattered in the Windows XP era so OEMs often built machines with incomplete 64bit setups, sometimes 64bit CPUs with 32ibt boards, or more often 32bit PCI cards, and 32bit video cards, or any other odd combination of hardware they liked. A "64bit Windows OS" in that era was about 70% 32bit anyway. Unless you want to add some RAM you are probably better off with 32bit LL 3.8. Finally assuming you intend to install to the HDD there is no need to enable the "virtualization" option in the BIOS anyway, as that has no effect.

@Cobey Williamson ,

I'm not sure why we're discussing virtualization in this thread.  This appears to be a graphics issue upon boot.  So consider the tutorial seen at this link:

Hello all

Attempted to install Linux Lite 3.8 32-bit. Result was blank display with cursor flashing in top left corner.

Attempted to run in same mode. Fails at "[1.668506] e1000e 0000:00:19.0 Interrupt Throttling Rate (ints/sec) set to dynamic conservative mode"
ends at flashing cursor

I've also tried to run Bodhi and Puppy Linux, with similar results.

Thoughts?

@Cobey Williamson ,
I doubt your computer is 32 bit only.  Consider the latest version of Linux Lite, 64 bit.  Did you also consider what I referred to in the Help Manual?

It's a generic PCI card error that appears to be your video card (no VGA cable connected ). Your particular Radeon card is Linux supported. Does XP still run on this machine?

Yes, Windows XP runs fine.

I have updated all the drivers that are applicable and available.

Will look into the tutorial @torreydale and retry LL 4.4

thanks all

Hi,
Don't if "Ese hi" is the same person as OP and solved the issue  but in any case.I was reading the thread and though maybe the "no VGA cable" message seemed to come from the monitor itslef not receiving a signal.Which in turn, "could" be that the computer has two video cards (one integrated and one added with a add-on card). So, just maybe, the display outputs to the "other" card, so try to connect the screen there?
Additionally, if you have two video outputs and are confortable playing inside computers, you could try removing the adding card and using only the integrated one.
