On the left side of the toolbar at very top of page was the word ubuntu. I used (only) that to sign in, and "away it went", and completed booting.

Thank you once again. I finally wound up fully booting into the OS.

That is great news. Perhaps for the benefit of others who might read this thread you could explain what finally sorted the problem for you. :)

Have you tried using dd to make the usb ?

Code: [Select]
sudo dd if=linux-lite-4.8-64bit.iso of=/dev/sdx bs=4M
where 'x' is the letter of your usb stick.

The only other thing I can think of is, how did you input username and then log in. I found through experience that you need to type in "linux" in the username box and then hit enter before clicking on the log in button, leaving the password box blank.

Thank you for the reply. I had read that(use Linux for log-in), prior to attempting that first boot, and did try that, along with several other standard ones, but that did not work. Anyhow, thanks again.

I assume this is testing from a usb drive, login should be automatic but you could try:
username: linux
password: leave blank there is no password, just click on log in.

If the screen locks during Live mode, type linux into the user box and click on the Login button (no password required)

Upon my first bootup of v4.8, I got the popup requesting login. I typed in "linux"(but no quotes), and got error message saying wrong password. I read to do that somewhere on the LL site. I then tried some of the usual pw's-user, admin, root; nothing worked. Please advise. Thank you.
Update: Somehow after posting this, I got onto Jerry's post about this topic, so here's some further info:
- What software did you use to write the image?
MultiBootUSB- this was before I saw the "doesn't work with MultiBoot USB disclaimers. It has the PLOP bootloader built-in. However, booting still gave same error.
