I'm using 4.8 and want to move to 5.6. My question is does Timeshift work for this or is it only for upgrading within a series?

I think you might have some problems, since LL 4.8 is/was based off Ubuntu 18.04, whereas LL 5.6 is based off Ubuntu 20.04, and some libraries as well as some packages have been updated. Your best bet is doing a fresh install to make sure everything works as expected. 
Without each others help there ain't no hope for us :)
