Title: reboots to black screen after most recent update

I updated today as I usually do and was prompted to reboot which I did.  I left for a while and when I came back the screen was black.  I restarted the machine and got the same thing.  I then rebooted an older kernel ( x86_64 Linux 4.15.0-23-generic ) which I am running now with no problems.  The only extra software I have installed recently is a VScode extension (tag wrapping).

it started after I hit the left shift key a bunch of times
