Title: Peppermint on Lite live boot
Post by: Ryan McCauslin on February 13, 2020, 04:49:39 PM
Downloading Lite for the first time. Created the USB boot, when starting up it shows the Lite boot selections, but then boots to Peppermint 10 live desktop?

After trying a few different versions and getting the same result, I tried SUSE on the USB, and that booted up as it was supposed to, no issues.

The only partition is the install/live partition. No swap partition or file.

Any ideas on the Lite/Peppermint issue?

Your experience sounds a lot like mine. I thought it was a problem with the ISO. I didn't realize Linux Lite does not support UEFI machines (it's not mentioned at the top in the system requirements, for example). What people are doing is: install a 4.2 test UEFI iso, and then immediately click the icon to system update. That brings you up to 4.8.

If you go to the page to download LL, look a little further down to see something about UEFI. You're supposed to click the UEFI logo. You'll land on a  forum post. The very first sentence links to the 4.2 image you want.

It works. It's worth doing. Linux Lite is very nice.

Thank you. I'll give that a try, but that still doesn't explain the Peppermint 10 distro desktop/install shortcut.

Oh, I tried 3.8 last night. Same thing as the others I've done thus far.

I guess the question I should have asked: Is your computer UEFI (no ability to change the bios to legacy mode)? If so, you'll have to do what I described.

I don't understand what you're describing about Peppermint. However, it sounded like what I experienced trying to boot LL 4.8 (on a Live USB). The USB appeared in the list of bootable devices (when I pressed F12 at power on). But, when I choose it, the USB device was accessed for 5 seconds, then it was like handed itself off to the hard disk. (I was thinking there was something unusual about LL's iso format. I didn't realize it doesn't have UEFI support. That's what was doing it.).

Couple questions...
What OS(s) are currently installed on the system?
Have you DL'd peppermint to this same USB? - how are you creating the USB??..

Make sure you not using a "multi"boot USB creator. Try Etcher or Rufus..
The manual - may have added info https://www.linuxliteos.com/manual/install.html (https://www.linuxliteos.com/manual/install.html)
https://www.linuxliteos.com/manual/install.html#llusbwin (https://www.linuxliteos.com/manual/install.html#llusbwin)

Doesn't hurt to try the UEFI LL version - it will also install to BIOS
- UEFI installer can install to either... BIOS only to BIOS (legacy) equipped.
