I think the setting you need to change is the sorting order for the panel window buttons.

Menu
   Settings
      Panel
         Items
Click once on Window Buttons to highlight.
Click the button to edit the currently selected item.
Look for Sorting Order and in the drop down menu select Timestamp.
Close the settings windows and I believe the items will then open and display from left to right as you want.

I still don't have a solution to this problem, but I noticed as I was playing with it more that it seems that most items open alphabetically based on the program's name. The exceptions to this rule that I've found so far are the pdf viewers - the LL-included one and Okular, which I installed, both open to the left of Firefox. So far, all other programs I've tested open in alphabetical order: Audacious, Firefox, Image Viewer, Inkscape, LibreOffice, Scid, Text Editor, Thunar, Thunderbird, Wine (configuration). Any ideas on how to change this? Or is this a bug that should be reported?

Pretty sure it's not this but, if you put some app shortcutes in the panel they will open in this order (?).
I'll shut up now... ;)

Cheers!

I poked around with those settings while trying to find a solution the other day. I looked just now to see how they were set, and my settings for that tab are exactly the same as yours. So it must be a setting or problem somewhere else....

Hello kris84,

Menu>All>Window Manager Tweaks
Under the tab "Cycling", may have the setting you seek.

These are my current settings -

I've used LL 3.2 in the past (on this same computer and for about a year) and after a short excursion trying some other distros, I decided to return to LL. I installed the 3.2 iso (64-bit) that I already had and upgraded from there to 3.8, installing all updates available as I went. I've almost got the system set up the way I want, but I notice that the items in the panel don't appear from left to right as I open them. For example, in this session, I've opened (1) Thunderbird, then (2) Thunar, which shows up to the left of TB, (3) Firefox, which shows up to the left of Thunar. You'd think this was just the reverse of what it should be, but when I went to my Documents folder and opened an odt file, it showed up between Firefox and Thunar. The order is Firefox, LibreOffice, Thunar, Thunderbird, but it should be: Thunderbird, Thunar, Firefox, LibreOffice. I've looked in the Panel Preferences, but can't see anything unusual there. Have I missed an important setting somewhere that's causing this?
