Lite not finishing loading

I'm confused.

What was the purpose of creating a Temp user account?  What account and password did you use to login and create the Temp account?  And what account and password combination did you use when you installed LL 2.6?

If the Temp account is in the sudo group, then it has administrative rights.  If so, you can use that account to reset the password to your Colin account.

Yes you can backup your entire home folder.  When you create your new 2.6 build, create a /home partition.  At the end, restore your entire home folder to the new /home partition.  In the future, if you ever need to reinstall, you'll only be affecting your root (/) partition, and your /home partition will be in tact.

I have installed 2.6 using the Flash drive  in root/ with a new partition for  /Home .
I was able to login OK and set up a Temp user account

I then copied my backup of (Home old ) back to the new (Home)

I can Login as Temp OK but I cannot get past the log on page with my Colin account  as every time I input the password ( used same one in new install ) the splash screen goes off and reverts back to login . I set the new install to auto login as i had in 2.4

Have you tried LL in safe mode?
I'm not in front of any of my LL machines... But I think when GRUB comes up, there is typically 2 entries for Linux Lite, the 2nd one being safe mode...
Again I don't recall much about it (prompts etc.) But it may help to confirm a successful boot...

Think I've seen some wheres Grub (LL) likes being the control.... May have been with a LL Mint and Windows set up..
It caught my eye as my 1 box that's multi-booting Win7, Mint and LL..

I keep saying I'm gonna build a VM of each OS
If I look hard enough I can probably find systems (hardware) with those OS's installed...
The mini is multi-booting Win7 and LL (that one has FreeNAS VM) although I have another system running Win7 with Win98-SE, XP, Mandriva and Window 2012 VM's..

Oh for "nostalgia" you also need Millennium and Vista LOL

Looking at the Install events when it hangs the last entry is


starting bridge socket events into upstart hangs


Tried looking on the Web but its beyond my knowledge but it is known about by some "experts" as is Linux boot hanging


With regard to the problem of having my Home in a Separate  Partition -- No I dont


When I was exploring whilst in the " Boot rescue mode" I can see my  Home File -  can I copy it into my Data partition and then Replace it after I have installed 2.6

I was on 1.8.or 1.6.?? and only LL on the disk,
I don't remember any issues, it just worked. maybe multiboot is the issue.?

I don't multi-boot,
Just VM's running a clone of my original XP Pro Live & Win XP Pro Backup
and 10 other VM's: MS-DOS6.22(that was a pain getting networking going)
Win 3.11 , Win95C , Win NT4 , Win98-SE , Win2K Pro , Win7 Pro , Win 8.1 Pro
for nostalgia , but I couldn't get Win2.1 running
Not forgetting Linux Lite 2.6 & LInux Lite 2.6 Backup

Hello!

Whenever I need to use Boot Repair, I can't seem to get the stand-alone Boot Repair CD I create to work for me. I have had more luck with booting with an LL LiveCD, adding the PPA and boot-repair (even though the changes won't be saved to the CD), and then run boot-repair.

Just looking - and this will exceed my Linux expertise... But looks like Boot Repair Disk changes things that LL likes?

A senior moment, I missed that.

I had a problem in my early days and I killed my install, would not boot.

I used Boot Repair Disk , it fixed it, I have kept the USB stick, just in case

That's true, Wirezfree, but since reinstalling Win7, his Lite 2.4 isn't booting.

If you have 2.4, then you use Lite Upgrade to go to 2.6 , no need for USB
Click Menu , start typing Lite U and select Lite Upgrade

What managed your dual boot?  Was it a Microsoft boot manager or a Ubuntu/Linux boot manager?

Your settings for 2.4 will be maintained if you already have a separate /home partition.  If your LL 2.4 installation and home directory is all part of the root (ie. /) partition, your settings will be overwritten.

after all the problems I have had I am getting paranoid about doing anything to make my situation worse . I would like someone to reassure me if I can upgrade from 2.4 to 2.6 using a USB drive with the hope it will allow Lite to load  normally.
Will it destroy the settings etc I have on 2.4.
