Title: Linux Lite boot and shutdown issues.
Post by: littlefeather on May 22, 2015, 12:18:02 PM
Hi.
First visit here, thanks for hosting this forum, and thanks for this excellent Linux distro.
My fondest hope is to replace windows with Linux Lite.

I have encountered a small bug similar to kevin kane, here:
https://www.linuxliteos.com/forums/installing-linux-lite/linux-lite-doesnt-shut-down-nor-boots-nor-its-detecting-wifi-signal/
This post was moved here from kevin kanes topic.

When booting ver 2.4 from a live CD or a USB stick, the startup is a bit slow, and the shutdown does not finish.
The .iso hashes check OK.

Burned the cd using BurnCDCC in windows xp.
Boots and runs ok, but the shutdown is slow, and doesn't finish.  When the scrollbar finishes, nothing happens.
But after the scrollbar does finish, tapping the spacebar on the keyboard turns off the power to the desktop.

Installed to a 4gb Verbatim USB stick using YUMI version 2.0.1.6.  Didn't work.
Boots to a black screen with a flashing cursor in the top left corner.

Reinstalled to the USB stick using win32diskimager ver 0.9.2.
Boots and runs ok, but has the same shutdown issue as the cd.

Gparted running in ver 2.4 pops up an error saying "LibParted bug found!.  Invalid partition table - recursive partition on /dev/sdb."
Acronis Disk Director running in windows shows the USB to have one partition of 758 mb with an "Invalid format" error, and 2.99 gb of unallocated space.

@ rokytnji
The USB install is a live session now, am hoping to get it to persistence.

More information about this machine, but this is not the machine that will eventually receive the installation:

Hello!

The failure to shut down could be related to a driver issue your ATI Radeon video card. We recently had a discussion about it here.

This post 'cuts to the chase':

https://www.linuxliteos.com/forums/installing-linux-lite/linux-lite-2-4-won%27t-log-out-live-cd-or-installed/msg13686/#msg13686

This SHOULD take care of it. You can also use the leafpad text editor as sudo to make the changes...

N4RPS has you covered for the shutdown issue.

Though you probably confused the issue with

anyhows. I ran a persistent usb when I joined this forum. Back then I did not have a internal hard drive on my laptop that I show below in my signature.

Problem is. I can't remember exactly if I used unetbootin or the Ubuntu version pendrive installer to make my persistent pendrive.

The "space used to preserve files across reboots (Ubuntu only)" is where you set up persistence using unetbootin.

Thanks much for the advice.
Makes it easy enough that I may actually be able to do it.   :)
It will be a day or two more before I get to try it, but i will post back whatever happens.
Thanks again.

Here is one way that worked for installing to a USB stick using a windows xp machine.

Efforts which gave limited success:
- linux lite 2.4 32 & 64 installed using YUMI-2.0.1.6.exe, worked OK, no persistence, slow startup & shutdown
- linux lite 32 using win32diskimager 0.9.5 worked OK, no persistence, slow startup & shutdown.
- linux lite 32 using LiLi didn't work.
- unetbootin did work w/ basically no problems.

What worked best:
- This created a USB stick with persistence that boots as quickly as any other linux distro and has persistence.
- Used minitool partition wizard v9 (pwfree90.exe).
- Used unetbootin v608.
- used 4 gb verbatim USB stick which had been formatted several times.
- This USB stick works OK for several other  distros.

1. Used minitool partition wizard to wipe all partitions
2. Then used it to create a fat32 partition using all the space on the stick.
3. Used unetbootin to install LLite from an ISO saved on the windows machine.
4. Had unetbootin create a 2 gb persistence file.
5. Now the USB stick is has only 1 partition.
6. seemed that 2 reboots needed before the installation ran smoothly ??

Steps 1 & 2 were needed to get rid of a small unallocated space at the very start of the USB stick.  I thought it might be interfering with finding the bootloader.  Just a guess??  It wouldn't go away nor shrink to 0 bytes using GParted, Acronis DD, pwfree90, nor windows diskmgmt.msc.

Edit:  Don't think the graphics driver was an issue.  Not sure of that.
Thanks again for this excellent distro and the helpful forum.
