Hello,
I am trying to install LL3.2 on a computer, the live dvd spins up and I see the menu, as it moves on from this, the screen goes black and the monitor power light turns off, as if the monitor cable has been removed.
I know the cable works as its usually used on another computer, and I know the cable connection and graphics work as I edited the bios and it is graphical interface, with various konky type aspects running.
I hear the Linux Lite start up music just cannot see on the screen, so cannot progress any further at this stage.
The bios is Asus version 2.17.1246, the motherboard is Asus H110M-R. The graphics are Intel integrated 510HD.
The bios settings I altered were -
1/ change to boot from dvd.
2/ chose other OS, instead of windows uefi default. (the computer does not have windows installed, its for Linux)

The answer seems to be due to your Skylake CPU. Online and in this forum, people mention using the "nomodeset" setting in GRUB to overcome that. I'm not sure how to do that in LL 3.2, but here's how it's being approached in Ubuntu.

there doesn't seem to be any option for nomodeset, I have the eufi disabled, fast boot disabled, (tried with enabled), have stack disabled, have enabled legacy mode and csm, it's still the same.

Like the links showed, there isn't a nomodeset setting, but an edit you have to make in GRUB, if you can get to it using the Live ISO. As you boot to your Live DVD, you might need to hold the right shift key to get to the Advanced options. Then you hit the e key to edit the GRUB file of the kernel.
Scroll down to the line marked "linux", and replace the words "quiet splash" with nomodeset. One link also mentions adding nolapic.

It didn't go to advanced mode when holding the right shift key.
It boots to the LL menu then same as previously monitor powers off/ black screen.

When you get to the LL menu, what happens if you "Press [Tab] to edit options"?

I haven't used the tab on the LL menu, I leave it to count down on the default first option, like I usually do before installing LL.
At the moment I decided to download the Ubuntu 16.04.1 its says AMD64, as I see reviews on the pc say it loads without any issues.
Which I can confirm it does, it loads to the desktop no issues at all.
Asks if I want to try or install Ubuntu, I selected try and desktop has loaded, I then used firefox and came to the forum. I am writing this using the Ubuntu Live dvd, on the new pc.
It looks nice enough (nicer than windows), but it is not Linux Lite :'( which we all know is the nicest :)
Is this any help as to what may be the problem ?
Or is there anything I can do from this loaded Ubuntu live that would help the Linux Lite dvd to load ?
If not is it likely Ubuntu will install, and is it possible to then convert that Ubuntu install somehow to LL ?
Edit: before trying Ubuntu, I also tried to see if I could the LL 32bit to load as a live dvd, in case the 64bit was on a faulty burn or dvd media, as I had used the 32bit to install to the 3ghz computer recently, the 32bit stops at the same time inthe same way as the 64bit.

I'm pretty sure this is the way to set nomodeset..
From the Grub Screen
Press "e" for command prompt
- Arrow down to the linux line (mine was 2nd from bottom)
- Then arrow right to the quiet splash - backspace to remove and add nomodeset
F10 or ctrl x to save...
Looks like a common issue with the Baytrails too, although maybe the video card(nvida??)...
Oh if this is a 64-bit UEFI system, Jerry does have a test EUFI installer if you want to give it a go.. here (https://www.linuxliteos.com/forums/linux-lite-software-development/uefi-build-test/msg29172/#msg29172)

I did test a 3.2 64-bit USB I had at hand and TAB at Welcome to Linux Lite screen will add a string of code along the bottom.. As listed
> /casper/vmlinuz file=/cdrom/preseed/custom.seed boot=casper initrd=/casper/initrd.gz quiet splash --
Perhaps replacing quiet splash here with nomodeset?? As suggested by Torreydale as well :)

Couple of suggestions,
If you have another Linux computer available, and if you can boot a live USB from the one you are trying to install to: burn the ISO to a USB on your other Linux computer first and edit its grub there; then attempt the install from USB on the other. Just about any computer can show a grub boot menu terminal so consider that option when you do your edit. Until the HDD is accessed, changes to a live DVD only live in RAM, but you can write and save changes to a USB, even add or preseed driver packages, thus a big advantage for complicated installs.

On the live cd I have got to the prompt removed quiet splash and added nomodeset nolapic, and pressed ctrl x to save, nothing has happened the cursor remains at the last character, and arrows and tabs dont put it back to the menu ?
Trinidad, so if the nomodeset works on the live cd it still wouldn't install from the live cd, I would need to put the iso on the usb and edit it first before installing ?
Or is this for future to make it available for editing on other installs ?
I do have other Linux computers, one is LL 2.n, and one is LL 3.2, both are 32bit.

I have just tried adding only nomodeset, and removing quiet splash, then ctrl x, the cursor remains at the end of the string, and tab or arrows will not take it back to menu
1 difference being , initially I could not get out of the menu to alter the text, last time I used firenice03, tab then e to do so.
This time pressing tab rapidly jumps it out of the menu and to the text.
Edit - esc key jumps it back to the menu and text disappears, starting LL is the same black screen, monitor goes to standby.
I tried 1 on each boot added 1 space after existing text, after each try, used ctrl x, esc top menu item enter, repeated all using F10 instead of ctrl x , holding down power key to shutdown then power button to restart and try next one , each time -
tab
edit add - nomodeset, remove quiet splash and --
edit add - nomodeset nolapic, remove quiet splash and --
edit add - nomodeset, leave quiet splash and -- , text entered after 1 space after quiet splash and 1 space after text before --
edit add - nomodeset nolapic, leave quiet splash and -- ,text entered after 1 space after quiet splash and 1 space after text before --
edit add - nomodeset, leave quiet splash, remove --
edit add - nomodeset nolapic, leave quiet splash , remove --
All produced exactly the same result, black screen monitor power turns off/standby
Tried fresh d/l dvd burn of LL 3.2 64bit, same results.
Update -
I decided to try it how Trinidad described and the edits remain so may be better.
Okay, I have not done iso or OS to usb before, on Linux I have only copied my music mix to music folder, or saved text files to usb or my wallpapers. Likewise on windows.
Currently my usual LL is not connected, shortage of cables need the one I am trying to install LL on and this windows one to write this. Extra cables and kvms on route.
what I've done before starting to try it -
1/ d/l LL 64bit
2/ d/l LL recommended win32diskimager
3/ it doesnt recognise LL 64bit as iso file, used ** to find it.
4/ use windows quick format fat32 to format new usb
5/ burned iso to usb using #2
6/ unsure if the new pc boots from usb or how to alter that couldn't find any setting for booting from usb, in boot or usb areas of bios.
Will try it now.
Update, it does boot from usb.

Consider Trinidad's suggestions. Or if a developer doesn't have a better idea, consider the Xfce version of Linux Mint.
I would think that there has to be a file you can edit on a bootable USB before you boot to it that solves this.

Tried all the above same edits, same results.....
Tried remove quiet splash, no ctrl x , no F10, typed nomodeset in place of quiet splash, hit enter on keyboard.
Lot of text scrolling fast fair amount about vpn connections, Linux Lite desktop has loaded :) , I am very happy ;D
Thank you Trinidad. Also thank you to torreydale, and firenice03, all been very patient and helpful.
Now how to install, will it install in the usual way, or will it need some editing to install like it did for the live version ?
Update - Install has the same issue, can it be edited from the live usb, or it needs some editing before installing again ?

If you have it installed, then you should now be able to boot (cold boot, ie. power on) holding the right shift key, get to the advanced menu options, and edit the grub as seen in my earliest links in this thread.

I have edited the grub, as you described, by finding the correct line and adding nomodeset, then doing ctrl x.
It boots to the desktop, I installed updates, which included kernel update, the update results log said to do sudo apt autoremove to remove efibootmgr libefivar0 as they are no longer used. I've done that.
On reboot it doesn't load desktop, tried several times.
I have to edit the grub again each time to get to the desktop.
There is no driver for graphics available in install drivers to change the resolution which is is 640x480.
I will have to accept defeat on this one, it is all way beyond my level of user, I have tried very much to follow the help and instructions everyone has given me, I am thankful for the help.

Hi bitsnpcs,
You're almost there! Now you know the change that's necessary in GRUB for your machine to boot.
But so far you only edited GRUB temporarily, i.e. for that one time before booting the OS.
The last step is now to make these changes permanent in your GRUB configuration.
So you would have to boot up your system another time with the help of the temporary GRUB change.
Then open a terminal and perform the following steps:
sudo leafpad /etc/default/grubThere you need to apply the changes you figured out are working.
Be careful when editing this file!
After saving the changes you need to run:
sudo update-grub
Then reboot ... and keep your fingers crossed :)

thank you for helping me :) I was just in the 5th ubuntu install in 3 days.
The changes you showed me worked well and LL reboots to desktop now. :)
It displays a lot of texts on shutdown and start up, can this be prevented or it remains because of the command added ?

Great you got it working!
I assume you not only added the command but also removed "quiet splash", didn't you?
If you leave these in, then you should have a quiet(!) startup :)

yes it has helped me a lot :)
I had removed quiet splash like on the usb edit, and added nomodeset between "".
I have added them back in now and you are right it is a quiet startup up and close down now :)
